    1115091 Ignition Coil

Before I go searching through the few salvage yards I have found with old, uncrushed cars, was the 1115091 ignition coil installed on Chevy passenger cars or trucks as well as Corvettes? If so, what cars/years do I need to focus on?

Can a coil be tested off of a car to determine if it is functional?

    Joe,
I believe many passenger cars from the 50's and early 60's used 091 coils. I don't know the makes ans models so I'll have to leave that to someone else.
Coils can be tested with a continuity tester but the proper test is to put it in a running car and let it get hot. No need to test them in the salvage yard. Just buy as many as you find and take the chance. Prices are cheap there.

The 091 coil was matched to the 0.3 ohm ballast, which was used on most C1s and '63s except later production 250/300 HP engines. This combination may have also been used on hiperf pass. car engines like mechanical lifter 348s and 409s.

Measuring primary and secondary resistance and comparing it to published values in applicable shop manuals will give you some, not complete, confidence that the coil will work, but you will need a sensitive meter that can accurately measure down to about one ohm.
