Anyone have photos of known original 1967-1972 white plastic license plate nuts?

Does anyone have front and back side photos of original/survivor examples of the two white plastic nuts used for the front license plate bracket (and also for the rear license plate) in 1967-1972? The same GM 3907444 part number was used from 1967 to at least 1972, maybe longer.

The AIM reference for 1967 is UPC 14-A2, Item 20 (front plate) and UPC 14-B2, Item 5, should be close to the same for other model years.

      Gary,

Thanks very much for taking pictures and posting them. I have seen at least two different types, both with square front sides, but one has four "prongs" on the back like those in your pictures, and the other type has two prongs. At this point, I'm guessing the two-prong style was a Ford or Chrysler product.

        Hi Scott,
Here are a couple of pictures of one of the original nuts from my 71, along with a nut from a current parts vendor.
You can see a few differences... I believe the corners on the original have a bit more of a radius; the four prongs on the back-side are more tapered on the original; and the original has 2 markings on it's front side... the number 18, and opposite that a mfg mark (I think) of a capitol 'D' with a very small 'c' placed on the vertical leg of the 'D'.
        I hope this helps you!
        Regards,
        Alan

The GM #3907444 nuts are still available from GM. They may have changed with respect to some nuance of original configuration, though.

              Thanks Joe,

I'll try to find some pictures of the current 3907444 for comparison.

                Hi Scott,
It COULD be that the nut I called 'reproduction', is the nut that Joe mentions. The vendors could be selling the part currently available from GM.
                Maybe?

                  Joe,

Question on a related part, the front license bracket rubber bumper. All of the AIMs from 1963-1967 call out GM 3742359 rubber bumper. The 1967 P&A shows "3742359 USE 3762180, 3-66", but the 1963 P&A shows "3742359 use 3762180, 12-61". All of the parts books show GM 3762180 for 63-67 Corvette for this application (Gr. 7.800), even the October 1962 printing of the 1963 Corvette front bumper illustration page.

Was the GM 3742359 rubber bumper ever used in PRODUCTION on 1963-1967 Corvettes, or is this a case where the old part from previous model years just wasn't updated in the AIMs when the rubber bumper was changed to 3762180 for PRODUCTION?

                      Joe,

I found a little more information on the front license plate rubber bumper. The '67JG doesn't mention a specific size, but the 66JG says it should be 3/4" diameter. The P&A's all say GM 3762180 is 9/16" dia x 1/2". As it turns out, GM 3742359, the part number called out in the AIMs, is 3/4" diameter. I found it in the 1963 GMC Truck Master Parts Catalog, Group 10.0740, listed this way:

3/4 OD x .47 LG Soft Black Ru

For anyone who has a known original front license bracket rubber bumper, 1963-1967, it should not be hard to spot the difference between 9/16" and 3/4" diameter. If the 3/4" size described in the 66JG is correct, then it seems Corvette continued to use GM 3742359 in PRODUCTION from 1963 (and maybe earlier) through 1967 as called out in the 63-67 AIMs, even though the Chevrolet P&As printed during those same years list the 9/16" diameter GM 3762180 for SERVICE.

GM #3742359 was discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1966 and replaced by GM #3762180. The latter is still available from GM.

Just because the 3742359 was discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by the 3762180 does not necessarily mean that the same thing happened with respect to PRODUCTION. The 3742359 may have been used in PRODUCTION well after 1966. In SERVICE part numbers may be "consolidated" by GMSPO and that would be even more likely for a part like this.

It looks like you have some pretty good info to feed of already. However, I do have a few NOS, at least I believe they are NOS.
