I need help figuring out which bolts go where on my 1972, 454, 4-speed, with air-conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. When I bought the car twenty five years ago, it had a bunch of high performance GM parts on it. But, all the original parts, nuts, and bolts were in a GM parts bin. I have no idea of which bolts go where. Can you help? I know I am asking a lot, but any help at all would be appreciated. I need to double check everthing from the carb bolts, to the thermostat housing bolts.Thank for taking the time.

OK, so other than the fact that the red and bold is annoying, and when you put HELP in the title it makes me 50% less likely to even open up the thread...
Do you have photos, or descriptions, or anything regarding these mystery bolts?
What do you have? What holes on the car are empty?
What's in your box of bolts, so to speak?
It's almost impossible (or should I say, waaaay too time consuming) to list all the bolts from a car. You need to give some direction. Without colors or bold.
And, the JG does give some direction as well.
Take a look too at Kevin Goodman's signature here. There is a link to photos of his Bowtie car which will probably help more than anything.

Thanks Anyway Patrick.
But you are not the type of person I was looking for help from. You sound way to busy to help someone like me. Some people are willing to take the time to help. I quite often take the times others need. I appreciate the link. I will add it to my others.

What you're asking for is a "tall order". However, I would suggest that you obtain a copy of the 1953-72 Corvette Chassis Restoration Guide by Joe Tripoli. There is a fairly extensive section in that book describing known headmarks, size and application of many chassis bolts. By "matching up" bolt size and length and headmarking you may be able to identify the application of many of the fasteners you have. I believe the NCRS bookstore has the above-referenced book available for sale.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: *** Engine Bolt Idenification on 1972, 454, 4-Speed, A/C, PS, PB,*** HELP ***
Joe,
Thanks for the input. I will pick up a copy because I do not have one here anyway. In doing my 63 I had a pretty good run at most of those bolts. The chassi on the 72 has never been apart, so the actual chassi will be in pretty good shape, but I know the engine is still part of the chassi.
One of the other member was nice enough to give me the "70-72 Bolt Head List". It shows most of the bolts, but does not explain where "all" of them go.
My real problem is just the engine and bracket bolts. I know that is a tall order, but I have to start somewhere. At least it is not the whole car like my 63 was. It was a basket case when I got it. Thank God a good friend has an original one I could use for reference. He also has a very very original 72, but it is an LT-1 with A/C, not a 454 with A/C. Some of the bolts on the engine are the same, but very few. I tease him because he has that little motor. (Nice little motor though)
A few members have sent me descriptions of a few of them. Another member offered to take as many pictures of the bolt heads while on his car.
All of these put together is going to give me a pretty good head start. After I figure out a few of them, it might make it easier to be able to ask for specific bolts and locations.
So, I think I am on my way to getting this started. Thank all of you for the PM's and ideas.- Top

Nope, I don't take any time at all to help anyone here...I'll let it go at that.

Re: *** Engine Bolt Idenification on 1972, 454, 4-Speed, A/C, PS, PB,*** HELP ***
I am actually doing pretty good so far. A few of you have gone way out on a limb to help. It is really appreciated.
All the smog is done and all the idler pulley is done. There are still quite a few strays out there to find, but for now I am going to focus on the A/C brackets and the intake bolts.
I have all the small bolts that hold the sensor to the evap tube and all the small stuff by the POA valve, but I am still in need of the bolt that holds the a/c hose manifold to the compressor and any of the bolts that hold the brackets to the block/other brackets or bolts that hold the bracket to the compressor. Some are held on with exaust studs, but there are a few further out front.
Most of the other front brackets alternator and power steering) seem to have bolts with 3 radial lines and a letter. Have any of you found this to be true? Remember, we are working on the engine bolts of a 72 454, 4-speed with A/C and power steering.
There seems to be a mixup on intake manifold bolts. The ones that hold the clips that hold the rigid vacuum line seem to be a small circle with three small radial lines coming off of it on a flanged bolt. The other ones are really what I am looking for clarity on.
Thanks again everybody. I know this is really asking a lot, but when we are through there is a good chance it is going to help a lot of people in the future.
If any of you small block and LT-1 guys want to chime in, I will register those bolts as well.
I know there are haters out there, but I use the bold and colors to try to point out the important things. If you are a hater, just go somewhere else.- Top
