    MidYear Wiper Pump Question

I have a 66 Wiper Motor that the washer pump recently stopped working on. I had never attempted to use the washer function until i was preparing my car for judging last Fall. When i first tested it, it would make a clicking noise, but it did not draw any fluid. The rebuilder told me to send the pump back, but before i do, I want to make sure that the problem is not simply in my wiring system.
So, I took the pump out yesterday and this is what it does when power is applied to the pump terminals

-As soon as power is applied a lever lifts off the plastic gear, which will then allow it to rotate. However, this is all that happens when power is applied to the pump portion of the motor and the gear does not move.

-Should the gear start to spin when power is applied to the pump or does the wiper motor make the pump gear spin?

    Thanks in advance.

That is all that is suppose to happen. The rotating windshield wiper motor is what drives the w/s washer pump. It sounds like what you need is a seal rebuilt kit from LI. I would replace the bellows also. When you replace the w/s washer pump back onto the w/s wiper motor ,make sure you have the drive pin on the w/s wiper motor lined up with the corresponding driven slot on the w/s washer pump.

hmmm, installed a new seal kit, but still nothing, no suction. I have another car at my disposal currently, so i checked its wiper motor out and the washer pump does not work on it either. I checked out the diaphragms in both pumps, but they appear fine. So, the release mechanism is working, the wiper motors function as they should, the seals are new, the hoses are connected, there is fluid in the reservoir and i can siphon it out, and I can pass air through the windshield washer nozzles. I'm at a loss. Is there anything else i can check.
How does one remove the diaphragms or bellows from the pumps? I don't want to go in blindly and cause damage.

      Thanks

Chris, sometimes you need to prime the pump, The way I do it is to take a old ketchup bottle and remove hose from resevoir and squeez some fluid through the hose til it starts to come the nozzle. then just hit the washer button again.

The wiper motor drives the pump. To replace the diagram or bellows remove the plastic body that the hoses connect to and then cycle the pump so that the bellows moves outward thus taking the pressure off of the bellows. Push in on the bellows and turn 1/4 turn. This should release the bellows so you can pull them out however I have had situations where I couldn't get the bellows to turn the neccesary 1/4 turn in which case I had to remove thew pump from the w/s wiper motor first. Just make sure when you re-install the pump to the motor that you get the driven slot in the w/s washer pump into the drive pin on the motor.

Thanks! I'll try priming the pump first.

              Re: MidYear Wiper Pump Question

I just removed the bellows from my '67 pump and purchased the LI diaphragm repair kit and washer repair kit. I'm having a heck of a time getting it over the slot with the spring to turn. I removed everything near it on the firewall and am trying to install it without removing the whole unit. I thought it was going to be an easy repair. I tried using the back side of a screwdriver with no luck. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to install the diaphragm?
