    C2 Striker/ paint details

The JG states that the Door Striker was on the car while being painted and should have "bare fiberglass in the center".

This brings up two questions :

    A. ) Wasn't there at least Primer under the striker ?

B.) How much of the Striker was masked off , ie what did the masking boot look like ? In other word , did it contour to the striker on the outside edge , or just go straight down from the top to the bottom , leaving the entire center of it unpainted ?

Mine is an AO Smith body if that make a difference.

A picture of what the Judges are looking for, or at least what you folks have done in that area , would be great !

    Thanks,

    Jim,

Your asking a question to which there is no correct answer. The goal was to perfectly mask off the striker and everything around it to be painted to perfection. The only way to do that properly was to paint the auto with with striker off and place it on the auto when the paint dried. That didn't happen as we are dealing with production vehicles.
Some masking was better than others even to the point of the above being perfect. (maybe sometime) While it is possible that some fiberglass could have been shown it is also possible that primer could be shown. It's just impossible to duplicate every workers habits. It doesn't matter what body St. Louis or A.O. Smith production workers all put on their pants one leg at a time.
Paint the Corvette sloppy like production workers or paint it like you wished it was. Your call cause it's your Corvette!

PS. Don't worry as the judges probably have never restored a Corvette but are experts at judging! Good luck!

"The goal was to perfectly mask off the striker and everything around it to be painted to perfection"

      Joe,

Thanks for the reply . That is what I first thought and I tried to mask off the striker perfectly , following the contours on it in the inside. Then I read the JG and what it said.

So now I am confused ,because as I now uderstand it , a "Masking Boot" was used over the striker. That to me would suggest that variations would be slight as the same boot was used again and again. If indeed a "Boot" was used, the only question is how did it fit. Was it contoured to the striker , or crudely construced to cover the whole outside area . If the boot was only sometimes or never used, than I can do pretty much anything I want. However as you also stated, this was a production, so one would think the "Boot " was used alot , if not always .

Jim, this is a 64, but the technique should be the same.

I am pretty sure that the jams have not been repainted, because each paint job on the car is a different color and this matches the paint under the sills, behind the door panels, and on the windshield frame. If you look carefully you can see some of the original red primer. Notice that it is feathered, as the spray feathered under the striker. It looks like the striker was moved but this may be due to the angle of the gun.

          Thanks Paul,

If indeed that is original paint , and it looks likley from the picture ,and what you say, that tells me the boot was form fitted to the striker. Exactly what I wanted to know . As they say about pictures !

Maybe I was not being clear in my post . However there are two ways to make a boot . One is to form fit it to the inside of the striker, as appears to be the case from your photo. And two was to just cover it all up in a box shape, which would have left the entire middle unpainted , or darn near , and that is what the JG semed to me to imply.

So based on that pic it looks like I have a little bit more work in making my boot . It a least however will be correct .
