    Trailer Security

Happy New Year to all! I've just bought a Kwik Load tilt-bed trailer with a Bulldog coupler. I've been doing some research on line and, of course, the choices in coupler locks is mind-boggling. What coupler lock do the members here use? I'm interested in DaBull coupler lock, which encloses the entire coupler, as well as an in-coupler style which only disables the ball connectoe. It seems as though that type may not secure the trailer, so I'm concerned about that aspect.

What say ye, trailer kings and queens?

Any car or trailer can be stolen by the pros. Lock up the coupler as best as you can and INSURE the trailer.

Yes, thank you. Now, do you have a recommendation for a coupler lock?

My hitch has a slot and I run a master lock thru it. I keep the trailer at a friends house so no pictures to show you.

The BullDog coupler has a collar that slides back, so it's configured differently than a standard coupler. I can't use a lock through it like yours. I'm sure theres trailer owners here that use the BullDog coupler. Be nice to know what they use

I had a friend who had two consecutive enclosed car trailers stolen 10 to 15 years ago. On his third replacement trailer, he took it to a sign painting shop and had the side lettered as follows:

"DANGER - Infectious Hospital Waste" "DO NOT TOUCH without protective clothing and gloves"

He hasn't had a problem with theft any longer.....
Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .

That would be great, except I've got an open trailer. Of course, some of my ricer friends think a 90 ZR-1 is toxic waste

Here's a pic of the ball lock I use.
Note that there's also a padlock on the lever that locks the ball when towing. But, just locking the ball lock - If you lock it open, thieves can just use a C-clamp to hold it on the hitch until they get far enough away to work on it. Lock it closed and they can use a 2 in ball (a 2 5/16 hitch will drop right over a 2 in ball).
Like john said - pros can steal anything.
I also have a power tongue jack, if it's lowered to the ground, it can't be raised and would be tough to tow.

better use one of these pad locks because any std one can be knocked off with a hammer. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ABU...-Padlock-3TMN7

Thanks for the input. The Master Lock looks solid. I think a combination of a collar lock and wheel lock might help. I know someone who is determined will get what they want, but if I can slow them down enough it might change their mind

master locks look strong but since the have a flat surface on the top a hard hit with a hammer will open it.

With a Bulldog latch your best bet is a wheel lock.

I've always found that a big dog and a Smith & Wesson are pretty effective.

I like Terry's approach, cuts down on repeat offenders. In stead of locking the hitch, might be more effective to lock a wheel. tirelock.com makes a pitbull that works good, not too expensive.
