    67 Tank Sticker??

    Hello;
    I have a 67 300 H.P. convertable. I have had it since 1977 and it is low milage and has been judged top flight and signed off for Bowtie
    Competition. I am curious about the tank sticker. I would like to know how to handle an inspection of this sticker without doing damage to
    the originality of the car. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Are you going to do the removal of the tank or have it done?

      Hi Joe, you could just drop the tank and see what you've got. Depending on condition (it may not even be there anymore or it may be perfect, or someting in between), this will determine your next step.

        Ken,
        If you haven't done a search yet on the forum about removing the gas tank I would start there. As other have pointed out the best way (Only way in my opinion) is to drop the gas tank. When you do your search you will find some stories of guys ruining their tank sticker by trying to remove it thru the gas lid opening. You will have to remove the tank lidassembly and tank boot to remove the tank so i would do that first. What I would suggest though is checking thru the gas lid opening with one of those flex dentist type mirrors to see if the tank sticker is indeed still on the tank. When you do spot the sticker you will feel like a kid opening a box of Cracker Jacks X1000!! Be sure you protect/cover the back panel in case you drop anything. Sounds like since you have had the car since 77 and it is pretty original chances are real good the sticker is still there. Not sure how mechanical inclined you are but removing the gas tank on a 67 is not near as intimidating as it sounds. Dropping the spare tire tub is pretty simple and so is dropping the gas tank. Good luck.

          Very good suggestion above. REMOVE the gas lid and the rubber boot around the fuel neck. Then with the light, look for the sticker which should be on the driver side of the top of the tank. The photo below was on my tank when I removed it in 1990. This was a 40000 mile West Coast California car. If your car is from a more inclement weather area, the tank sticker may not be as well preserved.

          If your car has regular thru the body exhaust, as most Corvettes, you may have to remove the muffler on at least one side in order to get the tank out. The spare tire cover lid, and tire must be dropped, then the spare tire carrier in order to get the tank straps loose, and then the fuel in the tank creates a problem and a hazzard, as it will leak all over once the lines are disconnected. The whole job is a PIA, but if motivated can be accomplished in about an hour. If your car is a BOWTIE car, you may not want to destroy the undercarriage originality to get the sticker.

          THE DATA however, as shown on this sticker represents a lot of history about your car.

            Ken,

            If you intend to bring your car for Bowtie Judging you might want to delay going after the tank sticker. The more fasteners that show evidence of removal the more questions will be raised in that judging. This is a case of less is always better. The tank sheet, if it is there, will be there later and you don't need the tank sheet for Bowtie Judging.

              Ken,

              If the tank is in good condition why go after the tank sticker, just leave it there where it belongs.

                James, I completely forgot about the under car exhaust. On both midyears I've taken the tank off I guess i was "lucky" because both of them had side exhaust. Don't you think depending on the exhaust pipe condition/clamps/ect that could be the toughest part of removing the tank?
