C60 engine shims

Going over the AIM for some information on my TCS/CEC system I came across some engine mount shims. The ones that are shaped like a V. so I went to see if any vendors had them and most list them. One went so far as to say that they were needed on C60 big block cars to keep the fuel bowel level? Is this true? I had never heard of this before, but I learn something everyday on these old cars.

They are used to center the engine cooling fan (the ones with the points on C60 Corvettes) in the cooling shroud opening. The fuel bowl story is :BS: On that other form we have a nice emoticon for this purpose.

I'll be needing to use these shims to center the fan in my shroud shortly. Any Idea how many are typically required? The AIM doesn't list a quantity of shims only the required clearence.

Hmmm...I was led to believe the fuel bowl reason. Centering of fan does make more sense. So does that mean on the non C-60 big blocks, the centering of fan is not quite so imperative? Maybe cheaper than making more fan shroud variations? Another interesting tid-bit.

I belive the centering of the fan is to insure that the "Tipped" fan doesn't get wrecked. If your car is an A/C car then you know how dear those tipped fan blades are.

Unrelated but I saw your post about the Oteker clamps, I use a similar source. Made a starter for a Marzen today and I'm getting ready to tap a Foriegn Extra this week. Can't wait!! Cheers!!!

Due to the shape of the fan blades on the non-C60 clearance to fan shroud is not so much of an issue. As Lynn has noted the C60 fan is quite close tot he shroud by design no doubt to increase cooling.

Wow did this thread go off topic! Sorry about that.

I'm using White labs Old bavarian lager. Not my first choice but thats all my local shop had. It'll be fine. It's a Negra Modelo clone.

Yes you're right- I guess this is wrong board to debate the contention that Oktoberfest, Maerzen and Vienna Lager are all the same beer style anyway. I'll be brewing up ~100liters of Helles over the next few weeks. Nothing wrong with WLP920 in my books!

100 liters... Way over my head, my equipment limit is 10 gal. or 50 liters. Must be real cold up there! Have fun and enjoy!!!

I know it is an old post but as to your question on the V shims and why . They probably have more to do with trim height and the corrections needed (AIM 0, A12 - A17) more than anything else. Kind of like weight and balance computations made so as to compute an aircraft center of gravity, insuring it's in limits (MAC).

Shimming the engine 1/8" would have no effect on vehicle trim height or CG location; I don't buy the carb leveling theory either. Centering the fan in the shroud makes practical sense.
