    67 Battery Gauge Test

I have my battery gauge out of the dash and want to bench test it.

Can someone refresh my memory and tell me how to test it with a dry cell battery to insure that its working? (The how to's)

    Thanks all.....Happy Holidays!

easy, attach two leads one to each end of a 1.5 volt battery. Just "flick" the wires across the terminals of the "ammeter" it should deflect noticably if good. A few things to keep in mind, the ammeter is actually a VERY sensitive voltmeter, as it estimates amperage by measuring the voltage drop across a 12 gauge wire between the alternator and the battery. Usual cause of inop "ammeter" is corrosion in the connection at the front of the firewall passthru, at the brake/steering column area.

      Hi Bill -

My gauge tests good with the 1.5v AA battery and it works in the car BUT all readings are HIGH - in both directions with car is standing or running.

I have a voltmeter in the car as well and its spot on when running at 13.8vdc so the charging system is perfect - battery is perfect as well, standing voltage is 12.7.
I'm just trying to figure out why the gauge is always reading high. The bulkhead connectors are perfect no corrosion.

I also have another battery(ammeter) gauge and it does the same thing so it must be something else. Ive also changed the alternator, VR, and horn relay - no change. Any ideas?

Al, I have to tell you that the amp meter setup in a Corvette is the cheapest, simplest piece of junk system that GM could possibly put in an automobile. The system will never read really accurate because it's not an amp meter in the first place. All you are seeing is a voltage drop in the old wiring system in your Corvette. And on top of that there is probably not two systems that are the same because of the length of wires, crimping, rust , corrosion etc. etc.
Probably your Corvette will be like that until it dies! Find something to do that will have a positive outcome on your Corvette. Give it a bath!

I'm with Joe, unless you have positive signs that the battery is discharged or overcharged, I wouldn't worry much about the actual number it is indicating.
