Tonawanda Engine Pad Stamping - 1966 427 Coupe...

    hey ---

have a question for the bigblock 66 folks...

did all 427 engines built in Tonawanda have TOxxxxxxx or could the pad be stamped T1XXXXXX ???

    Also -
the VIN sequence stamp - would it be 6S110503 or 6110503 ?

I came across an engine that is stamped with the T1 and the 6110503 - wondering if it is a faked up engine.
It has the IP suffix, I think it stands for a 425HP block - has the 858 heads and 942 block casting number.

    Any hlp is appreciated.....

    Bill

      Bill,

If the engine was built at Tonawanda in Sept or Oct of 1965, the source date stamp would be T08xxxx or T09xxxx. The first two numbers are the month.

The 6110503 would be the correct number package. This would be car number 10503.

A car built in the 10,xxx VIN range would likely have an engine built later than Sept 1965 so the T1xxxxx could be correct but more likely is T0xxxxx as the engine was probably built after December 65.

when I get back home Monday I will check the casting date of the block and see if it was casted for the T1 on the stamp. it's to bad there is no trim tag/ vin tag to look at and see the actual body production date... :-)

          ******** new info ----
          T1228IP is the stamping
          ********

thanks to all for the great feedback...

            Bill,

T1228IP means that the engine was assembled on Dec 28. A '65 with the VIN ending in 10503 would have been built in Feb 1965.

With that VIN wouldn't the date have been in early January 1966?

I was using the date calculated by Rob's C2 registry.

As an aside, a few early 1966 Corvette engines were stamped with the 'S', a result of the new rules to stamp the transmissions (not engines) with 6S1xxxxx, which, in turn, was a change from instructions for 1965 transmissions to stamp them without the year, but with the plant identifier, like this: S1xxxxx. And even that early '65 trans stamping format caused problems with the first 1000 or so cars, where the plant continued with the '62-4 format 51xxxxx (same as engine pad). But car 10503 is way beyond those early hiccups.

Noland discussed this in his Corvette Fever magazine column, back in 1994.

My apologies- you gents are correct. For whatever reason, I was looking at '65 VINs, not '66.
