The 63/64 JM really doesn't give much detail on the tube. My question,Is the tube the same size from the tip to where it enters the block, and was the SHP engine chrome plated? The JM only states plain or painted black. Thanks Ed

Re: 63 shp dip stick tube
Many GM photos of new engines show a black painted dip stick tube. Also, many originals appear to show black. I don't know if all were painted black though.
The handle on the dip stick on all SHP (340/360 HP) engines built after 2 January 1963 were chrome. The handle on all engines from start of production to 2 January were painted black.- Top

Re: 63 shp dip stick tube
The upper tube on the 1963 base engine is GM # 3826074. The part number for the tube used on the L-76 engine is 3834118 (1963 AIM, Sect. L-75, L-76, sheet 2.00) which I assume was chrome plated otherwise the same as the 3826074. The 3826074 tube appears in my 1963 (Oct. 62) and 1964 (Oct. 63) Chevrolet Parts Catalogs. Apparently the 3834118 tube was never sold over the counter.

I think you might want to take another look at the book.
3826074 is the dip stick tube used for ALL engines in 63 and 64. It was most likely painted black.
3739830 was the dip stick used for ALL early 63 engines until 2 January 62. It was painted black. Special hi perf engines after 2 January had a chrome dip stick, part # 3834117.
The 3834118 part number that you show was actually for a chrome oil filler tube, not a dip stick tube.- Top

Re: 63 shp dip stick tube
Michael,
You are correct. The 3834118 part number is for an oil filler tube and it was sold over the counter. I should have known better since I bought one in the late 1980's from for my "early" 63 SWC (#1450) but never installed it since it was not correct. I got the part number from a list in the 1963 AIM and without really thinking much assumed is was the upper dipstick tube since the chrome dipstick is part # 3834117.

Stu,
Did you mean the dip stick handle is chrome, not the tube? Tube should be natural or probably black.- Top

Re: 63 shp dip stick tube
Does anyone know the difference between a 63-64 Corvette upper tube (GM # 3826074) and the 57-62 Corvette upper tube (GM # 3732488)?
The 58-63 Corvettes (base engine) used dipstick # 3739830. The 57-62 Corvettes (base engine) used oil pan #3789629 and the 63 Corvette used oil pan # 3820000. The 3826074 tube must be either slightly longer or slightly shorter then the 3732488 tube. Enclosed is a photo of a NOS 3732488 tube as well a a photo of a used 3732488 tube and what I believe may be a 3826074 tube. According to Chevrolet & GM Parts History GM # 3826074 was replaced in Sept. 1974 with GM # 3732488 so the two tubes must be almost the same length. I believe the 3826074 tube is about 1/8" longer then the 3732488 tube. My vintage Chevrolet parts catalogs describe the 3732488 tube as "upper (8 21/32 O.L.)(curved)". I am not sure where they measure the 8 21/32" (8.66").
