    Front shock upper mounting washer

At the Texas Regional, I got dinged for having too small a washer diameter on the front shocks of my '75. The originals were larger than mine. Does anybody know what the correct diameter is and where I might find some?

    Thanks,

I think GM # 3790342 is what you want, still available from GM. It is a much larger and heavier washer in a dark , oiled finish. Chip.

I thinke they may have been discontinued . Look at your A frame bushing washer . IT is almost the same.

Re: Front shock upper mounting washer

I found them in stock @ my local Chevy dealer a few years ago. A couple bucks a piece as I recall. I stripped the oiled finish off and CAD plated them. Got full points at this summer's National Convention.

In addition to being larger, they're rounded (domed) instead of semi-flat and have no groove aound the perimeter like many aftermarket washers.

        Hope this helps...

Tory - The part # Paul identified, p/n 3790342, should be what you want. You might double check in the Assembly Manual. The 1953 thru 1982 Corvette Parts & Illustration Catalog, Effective March 1983 lists the application of p/n 3790342 (Grp #7.347) WASHER, FRT UPR (13/32 I.D. X 1 29/32 O.D) for 65-82. Pete

Bought them almost 7 years ago -- probably discontinued now. Yes, A-frame washer looks the same but center hole is different diameter.

Last time I checked, DR REBUILD had them in stock. I would also check with LICS.

EDIT: LICS #49-19B and DR REBUILD #6000476. Both are low $.

Re: Front shock upper mounting washer

Thanks guys. I just checked my '75 AIM and the washer is 3790342.

I'm wondering now if with the correct larger washer, if I should also change the upper grommet p/n 3790341, previously 3790351? Were the GM upper grommets larger to match the washer? The ones on the car are only slightly smaller if I recall correctly.

                    Tory,

I'm pretty sure the upper grommet is different/larger than most replacements. If it's still available from GM, I would order a pair.

Yes it is larger/bigger. LICS also sells these. Again, cost is low $.

The original front shock upper retainer, GM #3790342, used for 1965-82 Corvettes was a phosphate-finished and oiled piece as pictured below. It is now GM-discontinued.

The original rubber bushing used with the above, GM #3790341, was a piece specially designed for use with the above retainer. It is also pictured below.

                          All------

For comparison purposes, the attached photos show the difference between the 63-64 style front upper shock retainer and bushing and the 65-82. These are seen as the smaller diameter pieces compared to the 65-82 pieces. The original 63-64 upper retainers and bushings were, respectively, GM #5544049 and GM #3708378. The pieces shown are later replacements for these parts but are VERY similar to the original pieces.

By the way, most other GM applications for MANY years used the retainers and bushings like the 63-64 Corvette. The 65-82 Corvette front shock upper retainers and bushings were shared with only one other application. That application was 62-67 Chevy II. Why? I have no idea.

Note: in the first 2 photos, the 65-82 bushing is on the left and the 63-64 style on the right. In the second 2 photos, the 65-82 retainer is on the right and the 63-64 style on the left.
