just finished rebuilding the original close ratio 3 speed tranny in our 56 vet(vin 566) and when i got to the point of installing the throw-out bearing retainer, it wouldn't make contact with the main case---just a couple thousandths gap( picture 90 wt gear oil on my super sano garage floor?). turns out the replacement input shaft bearing snap ring has a larger outside diameter than the original snap ring's O.D. the snap ring must fit inside a groove cut in the retainer and the larger diameter snap ring provided with the made in usa SKF bearing won't fit in the groove. also, the snap ring proovided by SKF to replace the transmission main shaft rear bearing is configured differently than an original snap ring. re-use your old snap rings when rebuilding your saginaw 3 speed. mike

Re: 3 speed tranny resto tip
Hi Mike, I think I have a few of the original input bearings 1st issue before the green packs laying around still, I am going to rebuild my 57 3speed tranny soon and lucky enough to have many 1st issue parts to do the job. I think some of the newer USA parts may exceed the original ones if you can find them?- Top

Re: 3 speed tranny resto tip
the 1961 chevy pass car shop manual is invaluable if you've never disassembled one of the saginaw 3 speeds. pay attention to the pin that secures the reverse idler gear, especially when its time to re-assemble . i was able to get all new guts for my 3 speed with the exception of the first/reverse sliding gear. good luck,mike- Top
