    67 BB Power Steering Conversion

    Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of fitting power steering to my 67 coupe. I just wanting to confirm that the steering box on a manual and power steering car is the same (ratio wise) and to change ratios (when coverting to power steering) you move the tie rods ends to the front position on the spindles?

    Thanks
    Matt

The steering box is the same for manual or power steering Corvettes for any particular year. However, the PITMAN ARM is NOT the same. That will need to be changed. Most of the kits include the power steering pitman arm.

When power steering is added to a car originally equipped with manual steering, the outer tie rod ends are moved from the standard ratio position to the "fast" ratio position on the STEERING ARMS (which are attached to the front spindles). The "fast" ratio position on the arms is the INNER position. If yours are currently at the inner position, it may be that someone moved them there for "fast" ratio manual steering. Manual steering cars, all originally built with the standard steering position utilized, can use either position; power steering uses only the "fast" position.

      Thanks for the confirmation Joe.

I've just unpacked the kit and I think I might be missing some altenator brackets and spacer. This kit is suppost to fit a big block.

I've attached a couple of pictures, if someone could be so kind as to take a look and let me know what, if anything that is incorrect.

      Thanks again

This kit appears to be a "mixture" of a big block and small block kit. You don't need the balancer pulley pictured. However, you do need several parts that are not shown. These include:

        bracket-----GM #3878236

        brace-------GM #3878239

        support-----GM #3878240

        alternator pulley----GM #3829193

        belt-----GM #3878244 (pump drive)

        belt-----GM #3878243 (alternator drive)

You will also need a variety of bolts that I do not see pictured.

None of the above-referenced parts are available from GM but all are available in reproduction.
