The wiper door actuator on early cars had a change on the nipple. Does any one know about what serial number range that would be? Also what is consider a early car my cars VIN is 194371S104764 would that be a early car according to NCRS? Thanks

The date was applied at the AO Smith plant so that date is when your frame was completed.
Your car would still be considered some what early due to no cars built in part of September, October then restarted in mid November and yours was assembled in December of 70. I would expect your car to have the curved tube but it still could have had a straight tube at that build time.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
Hi Lyndon,
I think a rebuild and replate of the original part is almost always a good choice over a reproduction part.
Member Bob Demmel in Texas does that work on the headlight and wiper door actuators. His ad appears in the DRIVELINE in the 'services' section.
If the metal surface is very pitted and can't be 'smoothed', I opt for a new one, but otherwise a rebuild.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
Hi Lyndon
The advice from Al is the one to go with. Repops don't have the stretch lines on the pod. They are all nice and smooth.
If you can get it replated. Nothing to rebuild except for the rubber seal in the back if it is ripped.
I had about 30 headlight pods and 30 various pods replated that I had in a box for the past 15 years. Then I found about 10 more of the pods in another box I forgot and will get them replated in about 20 years....
Hope this helps.
A very merry Xmas to everyone!!!!

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
Hi Lyndon,
I mention the pitting because the new plating, (because it's "bright"), really shows up any pitting. And, if you work to get rid of the pits it changes the 'surface finish' which the new plating shows up too.
So a nice old un-pitted actuator is the way to begin.
The price was reasonable compared to a new one that's obviously a reproduction as Grant says.
Bob may see this thread, or you can call him to talk about his services.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
I had Bob do mine not to long ago. He did a nice job and is responsive to emails. The price was reasonable and when I had a problem with one of the repaired valves he stood by his work.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
I have a question on the production vs the NOS or service actuators.
On the originals you could slide your finger under the bent tube.
I have NOS AC actuators, service parts, where the tube was so close to the cannister that you could not. The spacing was different.
Do the judges look for this?
My car is a 71.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
Hi Kenneth,
I believe the configuration of the tube is usually checked on both the head-light and wiper-door actuators. The production head-light actuator tube is described, (with a dimension), in the fourth edition 70-72 Judging Guide.

Re: Wiper door actuator 70-71
Another item to be aware of is when you have your actuators plated both half's now have the same finish. When you view originals 99% of the time each half has from a slight to a very different finish to them. Due they were plated at different times then they were assembled.
