    Differential carrier pinion flange

Seems I have a continuing leak. Can this part be taken out with the rear diff. in the car ?. Winter project. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Yes -- Corvette 1963 Shop Manual, section 4, page 17 "Companion Flange and/or Oil Seal" R&R. You might need a Kent-Moore specialty tool J-8614-1 (I have the J-8614-11 which is the same thing, but covers the wider 1330 series U-joint yokes/flanges, as well as the C2 type 1310's).

Me thinks that a 36" pipe wrench will replace the Kent Moore tool

        Wayne,

When you reinstall the flange make sure to clean and seal the splines with sealer, that could be where your leak is coming from.

Thanks so I take it that this tool holds the yoke so that you can get the nut off.
I assume it is a slip shaft and does not require a puller. I will check out the assembly manual. thanks

Wayne, If you have a air compressor and a 1/2 air gun thats has some good power you can remove the flange nut.The flange it self will require a a few taps with a brass drift to remove there generally stuck to pinion.( put a mark on nut and pinion shaft so you'll know exactly were the nut was before removel)

removel of the seal can be trickly, a long flat blade screw driver. to get under the metal part of the old seal, will require some patience when removing. Install the new seal will also require the same. coat the lip of the new seal with some chassis grease or white lithuim. when you install the seal if you can come up with a 1/2 drive deep socket that is the same dia. as the out side of seal and a long 1/2 drive extension to aid when installing new seal.

Installing the pinion nut you should tighten to the marked location before dissay. PUT THE E/BRAKE ON TO HELP HOLD THE REAR TIRES FROM TURNING WHEN INSTALLING NUT.DO NOT INSTALL NUT WITH AIR GUN!!!

Wayne, I did this job on my '70 with an air gun. Pain in the butt, but doable.

Thanks for all the good advice. Yes I have a air and electric gun as well as a 4 post lift. I was assuming I could do this job without taking the tiers off.
                  Have a great Christmas .
