    Irby -

You won't find it - there was never "mitting" of any sort on the chassis, or anywhere else.

The steering box and rag joint on my 63 is natural cast, there is no signs of black paint or overspray. The photos are from preproduction units not as they came off the production line. If I new how to provide pictures I Would.

        Carl,

Every new 63-67 Corvette that I worked on when these cars were new, and I worked on a lot of them, had a black coating on the steering gear.
The 64 coupe that I bought brand new in 64 had black on the steering gear. (and coupler)
The first time I washed the engine and compartment with Gunk, the coating was gone. (that's what everyone used back then)

It may not be as pretty as a shiny cast iron finish but the black coating is the real thing.

There are still a few untouched cars around that have the black coating.

It's hard to say that "there was no black on mine" 45 years later.

          Michael,

Wasn't the black coating almost a tar texture???

            Rick,

I don't know exactly what the coating was but it seemed like tar base, just like chassis black.

I think a different type of black may have been used for the C3 gears that were coated.
