Checking Accuracy of Rebuilt Gas Sending Unit

I had John Wolf rebuild the gas sending unit off my '69 and want to check it before I put the tank back into the car. I already know the guage is accurate by using potentiometer. I have the tank on the bench such that the top of it is level. I put 5 gallons of gas in it and it only reads 1/8 when it should be reading closer to 1/4? Am I correct in having the top level or do I really have to wait to get it back into the car to accurately measure?
    Thanks,
    Jack

    Re: Things People Worry About

There is only one thing that is important and that is EMPTY. Run it until it gives out and you will know where that is.

Actually its the bottom thats level.

      Jack,

The bottom of the fuel tank is level when in the car... at least on a '67 frame and the top is sloped toward the rear of the car. Try that orientation and see if you are closer to 1/4 full on the gauge

These things never were 100% accurate. You have to learn the gauge. If you run my 95 Cheyenne to 1/4 of a tank, you'd better be sitting in a gas station. The most accurate gauge I've ever seen was in a Volvo.
