    Re: Air Cleaner Wing Nut

Is a wing nut for a 1973 black or chrome? Also is it the same sizes as a 1972?
    Thank you for your help.

      Ken,

I do not have a 73 Corvette AIM. What is the GM part number?

Pictured below are two NOS 1385852 black wing nuts that I bought in the 1980's from Dobles Chevrolet in Manchester NH.
      wing span = 1.26"
      wing height = 0.53"
      base dia. = 0.62"
      material thickness =.0.028"
      wing thickness = 0.22"
The bottom of the wing nut has a 0.52" dia. by 0.025" thick black plastic coating.
The 1385852 wing nut (1/4"-20) is listed in my 1979 and 1982 Corvette Parts Catalogs for 1976-1979 models in Gr. 3.403.

          Ken,

There is a photo of a reproduction 148312 wing nut in the AMK products catalog. Refer to my Dec. 24th @ 10:37 PM post for the link.

I don't know that this will ever get settled to anyone's satisfaction. In the 60's, GM was using at least 25,000 of these things every single day, from at least three different suppliers (maybe more); they were made in a progressive die setup, from very heavy stock (relatively speaking for their size and draw depth), and the dies required regular maintenance due to high wear rates. Anyone who thinks all of those wingnuts looked exactly the same doesn't understand the manufacturing process.

              John,

I just found some more original GM air cleaner wing nuts in my "collection" and I agree with what you just said. Pictured on the right of photo #1 are what I believe to be five original 9418699 wing nuts (same as GM # 219281 except they are not chromed).
Note that some have big "mouse ears" and some have small "mouse ears". The chrome wing nut on the top is a repro from a few years ago with big "mouse ears" (material thickness is 0.08"). The chrome wing nut on the bottom (material thickness is 0.06") with the small "mouse ears" is supposedly N.O.S. (GM # 219281) which I bought from Long Island Corvette on Dec. 12, 1983. GM # 210281 was replaced by GM # 1385852 sometime between Jan. 1976 and Dec. 1981 as per GM Parts History.

Ken, The original wing nut on my 73 has signs of black paint on it.
