    Air Cleaner Wing Nut

Need opinions on some wing nuts I have come across and had them plated. I feel they are correct in size, thickness and overall configuration. Here are a few photos now I need opinions. Thank you to all in advance.

Take some pictures with a dime resting in the center of the wings so we can get a feel for the diameter. I thought I had a picture of mine, but I can't find that one. The dime fills the opening between the wings.

Terry here is the photo you requested.

Patrick here are some as you requested.

Ron that would be a #219281.

I found these in a bin at a shop that was closing. Got quite a few I should say.

          Paul,

Put the dime in the groove so it's standing on end.

The 219281 goes back a few years and the wings of the part you show would not be consistent with those parts that are generally selling as originals for very high $$$. Didn't I start a thread about this a few weeks ago?

the thread i remember reading took place 9/28/11. discussion was on 55-57 wing nuts. gary chesnut measured his wing nut at 1.25" wing span, .375" wing height and .703" base diameter. i did not see any dimensions given by anyone with a mid sixty car.

What I do not understand is you ask a question an answer is posted you make a statement without giving a complete answer of what the inconsistency you see and why. I pose a question of where the other thread is so I could read it John has to give me an answer to that. When I read that thread you have a photo of 4 wing nuts ask which is the real one. But you never give an answer to your own question you posted.

I realize the 219281 wing nut was made for a very long time but the wing nuts configuration also changed over time. What was installed on a 56 corvette I think from the photos posted in the other tread do not look like the ones that were installed on a 1970. So if you could what are the inconsistency you see in the wing nut photos I posted?

The part drawing for 219281 shows it was drawn in 8/1962....

                    wing span 1.250-1.312
                    wing height 0.531-0.594
                    base dia 0.68- 0.72
                    wing thickness 0.266-0.297
                    material thickness 0.067- 0.077

Thank you great information here are the measurements from the wing nuts I found.

Wing Span 1.312 to 1.324 checked 4 different nuts
                      Wing Height .520 to .584
                      Base Dia. .712 to .730
                      Material .061 to .069
                      Wing Thickness .294 to .301

Have not checked the wing thick dimension but will later today.

                        Re: Air Cleaner Wing Nut

The L1963 to 1970's Chev. passenger cars used wing nut # 9418699 starting sometime in the middle of the 1963 production as per the assembly manuals.
                        GM # 148312 was replaced by GM # 9418699 on 2/12/32 (63 Chev. AIM).
I have nine 9418699 wing nuts from Chevrolets in the 1960's and 1970's and the measurements seems to the same as the chrome 219281 wing nut. Pictured below is a wing nut from a 1963 Chevrolet on the top and a wing nut from my 1977 El Camino (orig. owner), GM # 9418699, on the bottom. I believe the top wing nut is GM # 148312. Each wing on the top wing nut measures about 0.29" wide while each wing on the bottom wing nut (GM # 9418699) measures about 0.37".

Why would anyone buy a reproduction chrome wing nut when all you have to do is find a nice L1963-1970's passenger car wing nut and have it chromed.

                            David,

My 1963 AIM calls out the #117204 for the air cleaner wing nut. Is this chromed and stamped like in your pics or a different style?

If it's different is the 63 AIM using a page from the passenger car model.
