    Steering column length

Can someone provide me with the dimension from the base of the steering column hub (Directional housing) to the firewall or firewall grommet.

    Thanks, Joe

Joe , my 58 measures 27 1/2 " base of hub to firewall . It should be the same on your car .

I am the last to claim any real knowledge here but 61 and 62 cars have much more room with the position of the steering wheel. I think that they may be different. My 54 is really close to the chest, the same for cars up through 60 I think. Again, 61-62 position seems to be different with the wheel further away from the driver.

        Willard,
I agree, my 57 with the seat all the way back puts the wheel uncomfortably close to my chest and I am of normal build (in other words short and not overweight).
On the other hand in my 62 I move the seat forward to be in a comfortable position and the wheel does not bother me.
I have never checked the steering column length but I suspect the configuration of the dash, seat tracks and the seat cushions helps with the extra space.

I believe the column was shortened in '58. 1953-57 was longer than 1958-62. Don't know the actual difference though.

Thanks guys! I am trying to fit a flaming river column and lower shaft into a 61. I don't have the cluster right now and I wanted to get the column as close to original position as possible.
