Identifying original 67 Muncie shifter and linkage from a reproduction

How do I ID an original shifter from a repro? I have a shifter and linkage on the shelf that I would like to know if it is original. Thanks in advance.

The only component of the shifter that often has a part number on it is the shifter lever. If a number is present, it will be near the bottom of the lever in the as-forged area of the lever. If it's an original GM, the number will be either 38xxxxx or 39xxxxx. If you find such a number, it's an original GM shifter. If there is no such number, it may or may not be an original GM shifter but most likely it's NOT original GM.

The area Joe references on my '67 shifter is worn, it appears that the numbers were raised, and wore down over time. Joe, do you know what the full (casting?) number should be?

For the shifter linkage, no part numbers on the rods, but all three of my M21 shift linkage rods (UPC M20-M21-M22, A2, Items 3, 7 and 8) have what looks like the manufacturer's "M" over "W" stamping. I have also seen this logo on several other parts.

If anyone knows, what company name does that logo represent?

The 1968-76 shifter lever is forging number 3921640. The number on yours is virtually unreadable but it's definitely not 3921640. However, I'm pretty sure the second digit is a "9". I believe the 64-67 lever was GM #38xxxxx but I don't know what the complete number was.

There is so much used good stuff out there due to the guys pulling these and using hursts, that it seems you'd not have to deal with repop stuff.

My old Corvette (1969 L46 coupe, had it 11 years, sure do miss it) had the Muncie 4-spd and it shifted great, better than anything else I've ever driven, whether casual driving, speed-shifting up through the gears or revving the engine to help synchronize the rpms while downshifting.

I've always wondered, what's supposed to be "wrong" with the Muncie, that someone would want to exchange it for a Hurst?

The '56-'63 reproduction shifters are made about ten miles from me (Vette Products of Michigan), but I'm not aware of anyone reproducing '64-up manual shifters; they were made originally by Inland Division of GM.
