what gauge steel to repair a bird cage

I have a little bit of rust in the rocker channel by the body mount i need to repair. but what gauge steel would work the best

Using a sheet metal gage, on a 1979 birdcage, the door sill reinforcement (the long "U" shaped stamping) is 15 guage. The #2 birdcage body mount sheet metal also includes a "U" shaped Body Hinge Pillar Brace spot welded inside the hinge pillar. I could not get a gage directly on that brace as it is inside the pillar but it seems to me to be a 16 guage stamping.

thanks that is what I was after. I have a custom sheet metal shop close by I am going to see if i can get some left over steel.

I would use 14 gauge. It is close to the original yet slightly heavier making it easier to weld without burn thru.
