Re: "68" Stencil Location On Frame
Jeff
It is the outboard side of the frame. It is upside down because it was applied when the frame was upside down. It consists of a P/N then the Date like 6-21-68 the P/N is above the date in a white paint.
Jeff when you read this reply move to the bottom of the page there are usually other threads there about similar subject and photos at times.
That should help you now and later when trying to find information on a particular subject.
A.O Smith was the manufacture of the frames first in I think Granite City, Illinois and later in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Re: "68" Stencil Location On Frame
Hi Jeff,
Here's picture that illustrates Paul's description. The hole and partial slot you can just see should help locate the stencil location for you. I'd certainly think the exact spot varied somewhat.
This picture was taken with the rocker trim removed... and remember you seeing it upside down in this picture so it can be read.

Alan

Re: "68" Stencil Location On Frame
The stencil number is a frame part number or part of the vin? What is the frame number for a late '68' car? Does the date code match the trim code date? I read that the frame is stamped in 2 locations, under the drivers rocker and somewhere in the back left rear tire area. This is the number that should be stenciled upside down on the passenger outside frame rail. Old car probally can't see the stamped number.- Top

The frame stencil is on the side of the frame as in Alans picture. It is the frame part number only. No vin number. The date on the stencil is when the supplier made the frame, so it should preceed the body build date. The stamped vin numbers on the frame were done on the assembly line at St Louis. One on the top surface of the frame rail as it arches over the left rear tire. If the frame is clean and rust free it can be found with some searching. The other stamped vin number is on the top of the frame rail under the left side rocker. Have to remove the body to find it. Sorry I do not know the frame part number for a 68.Larry

Re: "68" Stencil Location On Frame
Jeff
You have 2 separate numbers mixed up.
The Stencil number is the part number for the frame and date applied at the AO Smith plant. That date corespondents with date that the frame was made. I do not know the P/N off the top of my head the number would vary by when the frame was made so you would have to use you VIN to calculate that and Manual or Automatic.
Here are some numbers AO Smith Manual 303196-40 41 42 or 43 GM P/N 3949016
AO Smith Automatic 303196-50 51 52 53 GM P/N 3949019
So if I remember this correctly the stencil should read as follows 3949016-40 or thru 43 depending on date of manufacture for a manual car
Automatic would be 3949019-50 thru 53
It could appear as this 3949016-40
9-19-67 with the date under the part number.
The other number is part of the VIN that was applied/stamped at the St. Louis plant that matched the body VIN number.

Re: "68" Stencil Location On Frame
Jeff, here's a slight wrinkle....my '69's stencil (Dec '68 build) is located on the driver's side of the frame. You can see the date "12-2-68".

Jeff, without taking the rocker off (pain in the butt), I'd be guessing. Correct stencils are readily available through restoration vendors.1969 Riverside Gold Coupe, L71, 14,000 miles. Top Flight, 2 Star Bowtie.- Top
