New question on C2 Rear Gear

I appreciate all the help you guys gave me on my questions concerning the 3.36 rear gear with my close ratio transmission. I am in the process of swapping out the close ratio with a wide ratio. I'm going to try it with the 3.36 rear gears before I decide on changing the rear's ring and pinion. What advice and comments I'm seeking is on your advice on 3.55 gears. I may decide on changing the 3.36 with 3.55's. I haven't heard much talk about the 3.55's. I have heard that they "whine" when going down the road. Any comments or thoughts on that? I'm 65 yrs old and hard of hearing, so even if they "whine", how loud can they be?

Re: New question on C2 Rear Gear

The available axle ratios for vintage Corvettes from 3.08 to 4.56 are stepped about 10 percent, except 3.55, which about splits the ten percent difference between 3.36 and 3.70.

Bottom line, not much difference, but it depends on what engine you have and your driving environment, which you did not state.

As far as transmissions are concerned, I've never liked the T-10 or Muncie wide ratios because of the big gap between third and fourth. The Super T-10 wide ratio got it right by putting the big gap between first and second, which is where it belongs.

never heard rear gears of any ratio "whine" unless setup wrong. I had 3.55 in my 1st 67 and never had a whine and I abused it alot.

1970 LS5 with 3.55. No whine even with weekend 1/4 mile drives!

The current suppliers for 63-79 R&P are Randy's(Yukon gear), Tom's(US Gear), Richmond and some Motive.

If you plan on installing 355's use the Richmonds and carefully set them up. If you go to another ratio use the US Gear.

Some of the aftermarket gears will whine some, most will not but I had a bad set of 308's in my own 72. Went to 336 and there is still a range I can p/u the whine. Used 373's with an open lash in my 69 and no noise. Used the full range of US gears and really have't heard anything other then what I mentioned. Usually when someone has a gear whine with a new set and they post the pattern pictures it is way off.

There is not much to gain in the small change, 308-336 or 336 -355 you're not going to see/feel much, going from 308-370 or 373 you will.

The M20 Muncies work well with the 336 gear. If you have the Torque of a BB you can go with a 308, if you want to accelerate some use the 373 set over the 370. The ST-10's are good for street driving and offer the 264 WR first which works better with the 308-355 but they are not as strong and either Muncie or ST-10 will blow up with over 400hp and abuse.
