71 454 correct carb Gasket Question

Hello everyone. Hope all is well and getting ready for Xmas

I am not up to par with 71 stuff so here is the question.

I am putting together my 71 454 and was wondering if I have the correct carb gasket.

In the pic the gasket is 1/16 inch thick. It has GM and top stamped on it.

Is this the correct carb gasket for the car.

If not where can I buy an NOS one.
I looked at Dr rebuild catalog and under "H" page 81 it is the same looking one as pictured - is listed for 68-69 Q jet Nothing for 71 454.
    Any help is appreciated.

After 18 years I hope to get the car to the painter by Dec 31. I did a simple spray bomb silver paint on the rear end area 6 years ago. Looking at it, it looked really bad so I took it out completely and now restoring the rear springs, trailing arms, rear end and restoring the 1/2 shafts which now looks like original. I have another pair of NON Zerk 1/2 shafts which I will spend a little more time in restoring the 1/2 shaft for the 71. The one pictured was a sample restoration, just playing around and see what results I can get.

    Thanks, Grant

That's NOT a correct gasket. The one you show is the 68-69 style gasket.

The original insulator gasket was GM #3982944. That was discontinued in July, 1972 and replaced by the 73-74 gasket, GM #3998912. The latter was replaced by GM #10069984 which remains available from GM to this day.

I would say that for an original configuration gasket your best bet would be Dr. Rebuild.

I agree with Joe the gasket and Joe will correct me if I am wrong was a very thick gasket about 1/4" or more and had a greenish shade to it just like the LT-1 gasket. Doc Rebuild has one listed I think on his web site item Z page 80 here is a link http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/CARB-GSKT.pdf but I remember they were black in color do not know it that has changed.

Also on your half shafts big blocks and LT-1 had the shafts shot peened so the welding discoloration would have been removed. That is why they have a rust pitted look to them that is the peening finish. Mark Donnally and Ron Goduti could help you with this both have done them to some shafts. They should have the info on what shot to use.

        Thanks Joe and Paul

I did order a current carb gasket from a local GM dealer, If it is not the same then I will get one from Dr Rebuild.
I will give Mark an email, I am trying to find some Uniroyal Tiger paw tires for him,

        All the best,
        Thanks, Grant

          Grant,

Some machine shops can shot peen for you. That's the procedure they used on my cast iron intake manifold and it looked like new.

How did you restore the half shafts you show in the picture, they look very nice to me..
