    63 undercarriage

Wnen the new C2 rolled off the ass line what color was the undercarriage painted? Was it in a flat base paint or a satin base paint?

    Re: 63 undercarriage

You'll get varied opinions as the sheen did vary. I believe somewhere.....between flat and satin is the answer. Mine is finished with a satin sheen.

        Re: 63 undercarriage

When you speak of "undercarriage" are you just referring to the frame and suspension? or are you including the floor pan (body(/

Reason I ask is that my 63 underbody is unpainted fiberglass.

Mike, all of the suspension finishes are covered in the 63 Judging Guide, but here are a few guidelines for the major stuff:

frame: gloss to flat black (frames started out gloss black, but sat outside the plant for varying amounts of time, this altered the gloss significantly)

front stab bar: semi-gloss black or bare steel

            Front control arms: Gloss black

            steering linkage: bare

            Front knuckles: bare

            front spring: bare

            shocks: gloss black

entire rear suspension (except spring): satin black (the judging guide says this is OK, but recommends other finishes. In reality all rear suspension components except the spring were black when they left St Louis)

            rear spring: light grey

            Hope this helps
            Mike

That really helps, will print off the judging guide, never thought to do that. Mike

I know what the JG says, but it's wrong. The steering linkage was painted chassis black as an assembly just before it was shipped from Buffalo.

Thanks John, you're not going to believe how hard it was to get the old paint off of my linkage, now you tell me I could have used a spray bomb

                        Rich -

I left St. Louis in early '68 - don't know what the process was after that; check with the C3 guys.

                          Michael,

I think the front spindles are coated with chassis black along with the entire knuckle and brake assembly.

                            Michael,

As I recall from somewhere, the orders to the fellow that painted the chassis blackout was: "Paint everything black that isn't already painted"

Is that correct? Was it you or Dave that interviewed that fellow?

Michael, until the latest JG revisions come out, I think the JG still says front spindles should be bare. I got hit for having black overspray on them at Nationals, so I'm sure black ones will get a deduction, even though they may have ben that way coming our of St Louis.
