    1953 starter date code

I am trying to determine if my starter is correct for a 1953 corvette.
It is stamped 1107109 and 116SR87
    4
    J
    What is the date code?
    It has no riveted tag
It has a bare alum. rear plate, should it be painted?
The front starter nose has a cast number 670

Bob my understanding is starters before 1957 had a oval tag riveted to the starter body, the 1107109 is it stamped into the case? 4 J could be sept 1954. could you post a photo it helps. Phil 8063

There is no oval tag on the starter, I found the holes for tag and they are filled with rivets that were ground flat. The 1107109 is stamped into the starter. the 4 is right under the 116SR87, the J about 1 inch below the 4,
there are three J's stamped in various places on the starter. What does the 116SR87 mean?

I can only guess that 116sr87 and the other numbers were stamped in by a rebuilder. Does the starter look like the one in Garys photo? Phil 8063

Would my starter pass judging or would I have to add an oval tag?
The starter does look like it was rebuilt. The starter gear looks like new . the bearings look new and the commutator looks refinished

For judging you will need to have the correct tag, that is where the part # is along with the date code.
