Re: need source for gear set for 56 close ratio tranny
I have not used them but have been told "American Restoration Unlimited" (201-843-3567) probably has what you are looking for. They handle transmission parts from 1940 to 1980 and if they don't have the gear/part in stock they can make what you need. My guess is that a GM part number and or a tooth count would be required. In a short while I will be looking for the gears to go into a 57 trans. If you find that this is a good source, please update us with your findings. Good luck.- Top

Re: need source for gear set for 56 close ratio tranny
Hello;
I believe that the input for the 56 trans. is drilled longways to vent the trans. as it doesn't have a vent provision on the tail shaft, as the other
years do. Hope it helps some.

Re: need source for gear set for 56 close ratio tranny
ken: i just disassembled my CR 56 3 speed. its input shaft and the new old stock input aren't drilled longways to vent the tranny. they are drilled horizontally towards the front of the input shaft for a couple inches then drilled vertically(in the threaded portion of the input shaft). venting thus allows gear oil and pressure to vent forewards a couple inches in front of the input shaft bearing. any gear oil will then be captured by the throwout bearing retainer and then return to the main case. there is a hole drilled into the top of the throw out bearing retainer that allows fumes to exit to the atmosphere. if the input shaft were drilled horizontally clear foreward to the pilot bearing interface of the input shaft, i suspect gear oil would contaminate the clutch disk eventually. regards,mike- Top
