'66 Side Air Vent & Kick Panel Question

I have been re-doing my side air vent doors / grilles. The vent door grilles had several "Extra" ( probably Bubba holes ) drilled in them. I have filled in the "Extra" holes.
I was looking in the AIM at the installation of the vent grilles and the kick panels.
If I am looking at the installation correctly, the forward two screws of the kick panel are to go in the bottom and the back hole of the vent door grille. Is this correct?
    My question...HOW ????
If I line up the bottom holes, the other hole is off at least 1/2" - 3/4".
No wonder there were extra holes.
Maybe I need to fill in the back factory grille hole and re-do the hole a little lower?????
You help / advise always appreciated.

It was hit or miss at the factory. Fill and re drill the holes to match holes in grill. It is a real pain, that is why you see other holes, change of carpet etc, they would never line up

      Don,

I am going from memory but I believe three screws attach the vent grill, (the top three holes). After that the kick panels are attached and the lower hole in the vent grill lines with the hole in the kink panel. The top kink panel screw is drilled and installed random and does not match any hole in the vent grill, it just goes through the flange somewhere.

        Thanks Tim and Jack
Tim, what you are saying may make some sense. The extra holes I had were basically on the bottom beside the bottom hole of the grille. The others were along side of the grille at the center hole but it did not go into the grille itself. It kind of nicked the edge.
So, if I don't get any other thoughts I think I will go in that order.
        Thank you.

What Tim and Don both stated sums it up very well. I just reinstalled the grill on my 67 convertible and the screw/hole placement is dead on with your descriptions both sides.

Re: '66 Side Air Vent & Kick Panel Question

We have discussed the kick panels before, on my 67 there are eyelits and I need a source for these. I was thinking Jo Ann Fabrics, any thoughts.

On my 63, I can't remember if the eyelits are used on the original kick panels so someone with a 63 I would appreciate that info so I can fix mine. I think 63 used one extra screw according to the AIM but with my car is was hard to tell if that extra was used in production.
