    "pre filling" oil filter

I'm going through the January 2012 edition of Corvette Magazine. I come across page 82 and I see a picture that looks like they are "pre filling" the filter.

I've never seen this! Has anyone done this with the filter.

I've done it this way for years. Is it absolutely necessary? No. Is it advisable? Yes.

There are some applications, of course, which because of oil filter orientation cannot be pre-filled. LT5 is one of them.

I am not sure it makes much difference -- that said I have always pre-filled the filter, even on some cars where the filter was at an angle on the side of the cylinder case I filled it as much as I could. Why would I do that if it makes little difference? 1) it is simple and easy to do. 2) It can't hurt.

If you want to have some fun and waste a lot of time go to www.bobistheoilguy.com (known as bitog) and see the discussion raging over there. I would bet it (that discussion) has been going on for decades over there.

Pre-filling the oil filter will reduce the amount of time it takes for oil pressure to come up on start-up after a filter change. The difference is probably a second or less but I think it's worthwhile.

I also have prefilled the new oil filter for years before installing it. I also punch a hole in bottom of the filter and let it drain into oil pan with the drainage from the oil pan before removing the filter.

I have always prefilled canister type oil filters in cars and boats when their vertical orientation allows same without spillage - it does provide for a quicker showing of oil pressure upon restart. Openining the new oil container also provides a source of clean oil with which to lubricate the o-ring on the filter before installation.

Right, which means that it has virtually no practical impact.

Well it is recommended on Ford and Cummins diesels. Don't know why but it takes no longer for a diesel to fill the filter than it does a gas burner.

The time theory is then thrown out the window!

Always the old saying, " Better to be safe than Sorry" comes into play here!

In the 44 years I've been changing my own oil I've never done it....never had an engine related problem. I do lubricate the oil filter gasket.

I agree. Pre filling the filter can't hurt but it's not really necessary.

No workee on newer Ford diesels. 6.0 and newer are mounted on top of the engine and drain back all the time
