The 3140 by "Chevrolet by the numbers" was for a 65 396/325HP Auto Trans Chevelle or Passenger car although the date code is for August,1965, 4th week.

A 3140-1 is for a 66 427/390HP Auto Trans passenger car. Looking at the date code on yours, they may not have put the -1 on the carb and it may be for a 427/390.

The 3140 has a 4507 Primary metering block, and the 3140-1 has 4820.

Thank you very much! what do you think the possabilities are that it could have come from the factory with that carb example parts shortage etc. that carb came in a box with other parts when i bought the car years ago. the carb that is on it is an AIR carb 3606 suggested earlier might be a service part carb. Sorry I'm new with the corvette #s but catching on as fast as possable

        Tony,

I wouldn't think it came from the factory with a 3140, unless the date code is very near to your production date. The carb would have had to be borrowed from a different production line.

I went through the same thing some years ago, when I thought that a 3139-1 came with my fairly late 67 (which should have a 3810). Thought was that they ran out of 3810's.

After a lot of research, I realized that the carb number I wrote down when I replaced my original 3810 in the mid 70's, was actually the carb number off a 396 El Camino I had at the time. They were very different carbs although looked similar and fit the manifold. I now have a 3810 carb on my 67 S/B dated within a week or so of my production date.

I think the first thing you need to do is to confirm whether the 3606 is the right carb for your engine by the engine code. Post the engine code and carb data, and we will go from there.

I will get the engine code when I get home from work, but I looked this morning on my way out of the garage going to work and the 3140carb is actually a 3140-1, Part# 3868864, date 584, car built 12/16/65. looks like the carb was built 3 months before engine asm. Possable? who knows. I will post the engine code tonight
          Thanks for your help

You have an NCRS e-mail from me about 3811 carbs.
