Re: Buying a car long distance
I looked locally including Denver. I had a set price so all the local ones were out of my price range so that was the eliminating factor. I search Craigslist; Auto Trader; Hemmings, ebay and various internet Covettes For Sale sites. I considered dealers and private parties.
One night when checking ebay there was two Rally Red '68 C3 Roadsters that met my criteria. Both had extensive descriptive information, including one that was advertized numbers matching and a list of engine, trans, rear-end, alternator and on and on part numbers. He listed the recent new brakes, shocks, bushings etc. Lots of details. His add also had picture of exterior, interior and the underside. Information was the most I've ever seen on and ebay car sales ad. Both cars also had YouTube walk around, engine running videos.
I bid on both of them. Around 1am on the one in St. Louis MO I was top bidder with 4 hours to go, but the reserve had not been reached. On the one with all the information in Fayetteville AR. I was in a bidding war. When it got to $23,500 I decided to let it go and and stay with the other one. After about 15 min. I began to wonder if that was his high bid, so I went back and bid $23,600 and to my surprise I became high bidder. He didn't come back online and at 4am I was the winner. After calling the owner I found out that he was a 70 yr old man with Arthritus and had bought a Hot Rod that he could step in and out of. The corvette was just to difficult for him to get in and out of. When I got it back to Colorado, I put it into a Corvette Specialty shop to have it check out. It checked out great and they verified all the numbers and declared maintenance...........They put the condition and value at the low $30s.............making me very happy and after 3 months and having the carburerator overhauled and it tuned by Lars, I love to drive it on any sunny day.
Shipping was a nightmare. I sent one inquiry to one transportation company on the internet and apparently it is shared. I got countless responses and call and there wasn't $50 difference in all their prices............ended up I borrowed a car trailer and my buddy with his new dodge truck and we went to Fayetteville AR and picked it up.
A great time was had and my buddy documented it with 3 videos on YouTube.
