    1961 Carter WCFB

At the Texas Regional last month, I discovered that although my carburetor was correct (3059S) the airhorn was not (6-1020 should be 6-1396). Is it possible to find the correct air horn and if so, where?

    Thanks.

Ted, I think it is possible. Look in the Driveline for carb vendors. They mix and match carb parts all the time. That is how they build a "correct" original carb. I removed a 3061s from my 1960 car six months ago and I will look to see what the air horn number is. Joe (Rowlett, TX)

You might try Phil Cancilla (sp?) at Custom Rebuilt Carburetor located in Middlesex, NJ - Phone No. 732-356-4333.
Although I bought my carb from someone else, he was the rebuilder and I did visit his shop. He had a large, diverse inventory of parts and complete units and was very knowledgeable. I am very pleased with the quality of the refinish/rebuild of my 3059S.
          Good luck.

search for "carter WCFB" on eBay....i just did and it pulled up lots of carbs for sale.

i recently had a similar situation with carbs for my '54. i needed a part and couldn't find it for a reasonable price from retailers. so i did some research, found another carter carb that used the exact same part, bought the compatible carb from an eBay vendors, and scavenged the part i needed.

                Rick:

                Thanks for your note.

I'm working on one such eBay opportunity now but my concern is whether or not I can dissassemble and reassemble the carb without screwing something up. Also, it is hard to tell from the eBay photos what kind of shape the air horn is in and how best to recondition it.

                  Ted,

I bought (and still have) a 6-1396 for a carb rebuild which I sent it to Chuck Smith when he was doing my '61. He did the restoration on my original and returned the 1396 saying that it was for an early '59. Since I don't know the difference, you may want to do some additional research in order to get the correct "6-1396"

Even rebuild/retailers work has to be checked carefully. A recent AFB I aquired from a third party that was rebuilt by a previously mentioned firm had the wrong vent tubes in the air horn and one incorrect primary venturi cluster. They made an exchange with me on the air horn, but the replacement piece was missing the fresh air tube. Eventually they sent one, but it was aluminum instead of brass. I then, due to my frustration, just replaced the air horn with a donor I had reconditioned here in Florida and it came out much better. I also learned very recently that the replacement venturi cluster they sent me had the wrong idle/low speed jet tube in it. Just because these tubes are fixed in place is no certainty that they have not been removed/replaced or drilled out. The tools still are available to remove and replace them. To do a real thorough inspection of a donor or rebuilt carb, one almost needs to check all the jets and air bleeds for sizes with numbered drills. Just because an air horn, main body or base has the right model or code number on it does not mean it is up to original specs or standards.

If I remeber correctly the 1020 top is a 1955 . Very hard to find .
