Hello. My name is Gary. I am new to the NCRS discussion boards. Long time Corvetteforum member.

I am in the process of getting my 69 ready for flight judging in Kissimmee.

A little background on the car...Lemans Blue/Blue Leather 427/390 4 speed car. Has PS, PB, Tilt Tele, Factory AC and Factory Side Pipes. I have Tank sticker and POP. The car was disassembled in 86 and repainted with Lacquer, and then parked in a garage and never reassembled. I purchased the car in March/2011 and started to get it back together again. It is now up and running and I am trying to drive it and enjoy it.

I am located in Miami and was wondering if there are any members in the area with experienced with 68-69 cars that would be willing to help me prejudge my car.

Is there a form somewhere that I can print to register for judging?

I am also trying to figure out how to approach a few things that remain on my list of fixes...

I have pitted upper corner windshield moldings. I purchased replacements, but found out that the windshield needed to be removed in order to replace. I have the original glass on the car and was told there is a good chance it will crack in the process. Should I leave these alone for now?

My engine compartment is very original. I had to replace the vacuum hoses as they were pretty dried up. I also had to replace both headlight actuators. I recored my original radiator. Aside from that, I still havent done anything to clean it up as I prefer the survivor look. Trying to figure out the best way to go about cleaning the engine compartment without making it look freshly restored. I have a small valve cover gasket leak and when I change out the gaskets I figure I will try to just degrease everything. Engine and trans have never been worked on our out of car. Any thoughts?

Hi Gary,
a couple quick answers because no one else has yet.
First I would go into your post and remove the photos, resize them, and then add just a couple back into a new post, in the thread. Now they are so large they make your post hard to read.
The registration form for Kissimmee is in the Sept-Oct Driveline on page 115-116.
Copy it there, complete it and send it in to address given on bottom of form.
Many Regional events use Online registration, but Florida does not.
I suggest you do not worry about your pitted windshield moulding for this event. It will not hurt your points much at all.
I like to use Simple Green for cleaning up the engine bay. Rags, brushes, cleaner and lots of patience will do the trick.
Others will have other ideas. I would focus on little touch ups and cleaning and sorting. Hopefully you have the 68-69 TIM & Judging Guide to help you prepare your car.
You have a beautiful hi option car, that looks great. Good luck with it at Kissimmee. Go into the judging looking to learn a lot about your car, and have a lot of fun while you are at it.

Welcome aboard. Check out page 110 of the latest Driveline for the registration form. If you don't have it, navigate up to the blue bar at the top of this page and you will see the latest Driveline as an online version. You will see it there !

More than anything else, make sure every thing works, the ops check is where you can get killed. The rest will take care of it'self. If you go changing a lot now, you may hurt yourself more than help. You need a base line to start from.

However, I would recommend ordering the judging manual for your car and the general judging manual, otherwise the scoring sheets are a little cryptic. The best thing would be to go do a chapter judging meet, look up the chapter near you and see if there is one coming up or someone you could contact for specific advice about your car. It looks good, but also looks like some parts are missing (ignition shielding for instance), and these all add up for deductions, as do the correct part numbers and date codes for many. These along with the all important ops items mentioned that need to work, will be the major challenge for you. Good luck, it can be fun and frustrating, but worth the experience.

Don't forget NCRS sticker, battery cut-off switch and a fire extinguisher, easiest points you can get.

I good solution to clean your engine compartment and chassis without damaging any of the paint finish is Simple Green. It can be diluted to 50% for mild dirt and degreasing. Spray it on, wipe or brush lightly(soft plastic bristles only) and rinse off with water.

I'm assuming you're going to address the missing shielding. Also, a couple of other things nobody mentioned............. the radial tires are going to be a deduct and since you're doing the valve cover gaskets they should be silver cork. I don't know if anybody makes 'em silver anymore, but you can do it with silver paint on the tabs that show out from under the covers and on the edges. The engine lift bracket on the L front of the intake looks black in the pictures, and the floormats will cost a little too. You should probably put the mat back under the front edge of the hood. Maybe the picture is foolin' me, but the antenna looks awfully tall in the 1st one. All of this stuff is minor, but minor stuff ads up and is often easy to correct.

Thank you for all of the info.

I sent in the registration form yesterday for Kissimmee.

I was waiting to do the valve cover gaskets before I put the shielding back. The passenger side gasket still has the silver foil on the tabs, so it might be the original.

I have purchased 2 sets of the hood insulation and the fit is nothing close to factory. Ecklers had a really thin piece. Paragon was the correct thickness, but totally the wrong shape and the holes are not lined up properly. The kit comes with new studs, so I assume they want you to remove your old ones and use the new ones...was annoyed, so I just left it alone. Not sure what to do.

A few people have pointed out to me that the hood hinges should be black. Page 68 of the 68-69 judging manual states that they are dull silver cadmium plated and should have both blackout and body color overspray.
Is this correct?

Antenna is the correct 31 inch and has the larger mast, so likely the original.

As far as the luggage rack goes, would I be better off installing it for judging or leaving the plugs? I hate the rack. It was almost a deal breaker. Will it be the same deduction either way?

I currently have a 7040205 carb off a 70 454/4sp vette on the car. I have a show quality restored 7029215 with the proper date stamp 1689 (not a restamp) that I bought for the car, but was unable to save. It was basically crumbling apart from the inside. Will I get any points for having the correct carb off the car?

With or with out the luggage rack, the deduction will be for 6 holes in the fiberglass.

I don't know what to tell you about the hood insulation, unless you can trim the larger piece to fit. I would never consider replacing your original hood pins. Better to manipulate the insulation some how -- or for now just leave it off.

It doesn't matter if you have the luggage rack on or not. We judge the holes in the body -- not the luggage rack. Our standard is how the car came to the dealer from the factory -- with normal new car preparation. Installing a luggage rack was not normal, but it was a dealer installed accessory (or could have been). I think the dealer racks had 6 mounting posts (holes) and later racks had 8 holes -- so if you have 8 holes you will receive a proportionately greater deduction than for 6 holes -- but in either case I think it is less than 5 points lost for the holes. Someone who judges exteriors more than I needs to confirm or refute my point assessment though.

The description of the hinges is right in the TIM&JG. They are basically silver colored plate, but they were in place, including any shims necessary for alignment, when the blackout was applied. Black out was applied after body paint, so the outer most part of the hinges will still show some body color where the black out failed to cover. Best idea is to look at original paint cars. Words (regardless how many) are simply not adequate to describe the details.

Mike answered your carburetor question with a lot fewer words than I would have used. Mike is good that way.
