    63 battery fit

Having trouble finding a group 24 battery that doesnt have a molded ridge on each end at the top. Prevents my retainer from dropping down flush with the battery top. Battery cases have been redesigned since my last battery in '06.If the battery has a carrying strap it has the lip. One vendor said Johnson Controls furnishes cases to most makers. Anybody encountered this problem? Tried 5 vendors. Happy Turkey

I found this also. I just trimmed the plastic on the top edges of the battery. As you said, it is covered by the retainer. No problems.

It ain't pretty but in a pinch I have cut the molded ridges for the handles off with a fine tooth hacksaw blade. I use just the blade itself, then a big black magic marker to help cover up the evidence.

The battery I have in my '64 is an AC Delco ACD24-60 (88900671) and it fit with no issues.

It has a handle that folds flush into the top of the battery and the retainer fits with no modification necessary.

I have had this battery for a few years (since mid-2008), so I cannot say with certainty that the newest generation is still made this way.

The resto battery in my 63 died ~2 years ago. I replaced it with an AC Delco sealed battery.

I had to hacksaw the "tabs" off to get the retainer to fit too.

Guys thanks for your help. I sawed an O'Reilly which removes the strap. I put a GI web strap around the battery and used it to slip the battery in. Helps lower it in place.

You could have used one of those battery straps, the kind that has rings that fit over the + and - terminals.

I've got 2 of them, and they work pretty well for lifting and carrying a top post battery.
