58 Spotted in Germany

I was in Germany last week and walking to another ABC tour, when to my amazement I spotted a 58 vette, with the top down. Very COOL!

It was a cool november day, with the temperature just above freezing!

Got to hand it to the Germans, they wont let a little cold stop them from enjoying a Sunday cruise.

The car you saw, or one just like it was displayed at the Concours de'Elegance Old Timers show held every year at the Schlossgarten Schwetzengen, about 15 km west of Heidelberg. This year they had a total of 9 Corvettes at the event. There were a coule of really nice 58's, a very nice '57, a '69 that looked nice but was a long way from NCRS standards. Last year there were no Vettes at the event, with only one at the event 4 years ago.

My wife was born in Schwetzengen and her father and brother live in Eppelheim, about 1 km west of Heidelberg. The show is held on the first weekend of September, our Labor Day weekend. It is worth the visit if you are there. We always plan our trip to visit the family so we can go to the Old Timers in Schwetzengen, and partake in the first week of the real Octoberfest, not the Munchen, Americanized beer brawl. I promise you will see cars there you will never see in the US, like serial # 2 Mercedes Benz steam carriage.

Plus, they serve real beer there, not this stuff the US brewers try to pass off over here.

Why Yes Bill, they do.

Guess I'll have to not mention the other, even more rare, and equally interesting cars on this board again, like the 1923 Peugot Corvette. Only 51 built, and according to the owner, who had a beer in his hand, only 2 survive.

Corvettes and beer, who woulda thunk it. Woops, can I mention beer here?

I guess I am a little sensitive about America at this point in my life.

I was also surprised last time I was over there in 1999 with Air Force, I saw couple mid years, a c1, and a steel bumper c3 and later c3(80s) all these were in southern Germany, while in Japan in 90 saw a 63 (base coupe) on lot that had asking price of 100k, same area was 83 honda 1100F sport bike(83 only bike) with asking price of 8k, could buy in states for 3k, both were previously owned by miliary folks.

For English speakers. I had Kolsch last time in Germany but my favorite is Welde No. 1. It is from Plankstadt near Heidelberg.

Now back to cars. I have been impressed with the number of Vettes in Germany. Last year saw a new ZR 1 just outside Frankfurt on the A5 headed south. Lost him quickly. What is sad, I talked to the owners of 6 of the Vettes in Schwetzengen and not a one knew about NCRS.
