C1 283 engine oil filter bypass valve gasket

    C1 283 engine oil filter bypass valve gasket

    Is there supposed to be a gasket between the oil filter bypass valve and the block mounting surface? Nothing indicated in the AIM or the pass car shop manual or ST-12, but several vendors list one. Is it just marketing or is it a good idea to install one even if mating surfaces are clean and flat.

    A gasket was added between the block and the adapter/valve in 1967, the last year that the canister style filter was used for most Chevrolet engines. I don't have any idea why someone in GM thought this gasket was needed.

    The gasket can be used for earlier applications but I don't think it's going to do anything for you, just like I don't think it's going to do anything for 1967 engines in which it was originally installed.

      I just removed mine and there was no gasket and no leak. I cannot see a need for it either.

        Any slight seepage past this non-gasketed joint will be internal, so no external oil leak, and there will be no measureable effect on oil pressure. The size of any leak paths would likely not be much larger than the filter media, so no particles will get through.

        If you have any of these gaskets it's okay to use them, but if you don't have any, don't bother to buy them.

        I always removed the filter valve housing to install a new cannister gasket every other filter change. Use a little grease to keep the gasket in place before reinstalling the bypass valve housing. If it's not properly seated you can dump two quarts of oil on the ground by the time you check it and shut off the engine. Don't ask me how I know this.

          Thank you all. As Duke suggested, I couldn't imagine any leakage would be very detrimental and would be internal, so I leaned towards omitting the gasket since I couldn't find one in my several old gasket sets. Thanks for the help.
