66 AO Smith Vert paint questions

The JG says "The underside of the rear Deck Lid is painted body color , but is not buffed out ".

Does this mean they used the metalic paint when metalic paint was used ? Or should it be painted the same way as all the other interior trim pieces and storage bins were painted, same color, sans Metal Flake ?

The same question goes for the Hard Top Trim Pieces.

Lastly , is there a post, or even two or three , where they really detail all the nuances of the painting process inside and out . (ie duller door jambs ,channel troughs , lower portion of car etc.etc ). I looked , but could not find one . It would sure be easier than going through the entire JG and taking notes on each section ! Especially if I miss something !

    Thanks for viewing ,

    Jim

Backside of deck lid was painted same as body color...unbuffed. Deck lid opener handle, cable and locks were in place at time of painting.

Hardtop trim pieces would get the same treatment as the interior trim.

      Jim -

The same paint was used on the bottom of the deck lid (and the hardtop moldings) as was used on the outside of the car, but only the outside (above the side feature line) was buffed; that's why the areas that weren't buffed are referred to as "duller".

If you'll go to the Michigan NCRS site (www.michiganncrs.org), the right side of the home page has a section called "Seminar Dowloads"; there's a file there called "Corvette Assembly Process", which is a 27-page text .pdf detailing the entire midyear assembly process, from the underbody to the shipping gate, including the gory detail of the Paint Shop process. There are also three PowerPoint files, which is the Assembly Process presentation I gave at the National Convention in Novi (over 220 slides/photos of the process).

Those files should answer most questions about the assembly process, in text and photos.

        Thanks John And Michael,

So the under deck lid and the hard top trim did have metal flake in them as well ! Good to know !

By the time I got my car, it had already been repainted a different color, and the the hard top trim was in primer, so I had no reference points.

Thanks for the directions to those other reference sites too !!!

          John ,

Just finished looking at those photos and explanations . Wow ! This will take some time to review properly. Really great to have so many photos in one place ! A job well done !

          Thanks again,

          Jim

Re: 66 AO Smith Vert paint questions

Hi John, I am restoring my 63 SWC and it is my first Corvette restoration. The PDFs and PowerPoint files that you referenced would be extremely helpful to me. However, the link to the documents seems to have been taken down from the site. My interior is dark blue and the outside is Daytona Blue. I am trying to repaint the trim moldings and done have any real experience painting. They are a dull blue now. The NCRC Technical Information Manual says that they should be full gloss and the same color as the interior, but not polished. I think that your post says it should be the same color as the exterior of the car. I am confused as to how which color to paint them. Also, this is a stupid question but what does not polished mean? I have die for the interior but I don't think that will work on metal and am not sure if it is the right color or sheen. Any help you can provide on what type of paint to get and how to go about this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Dan

              Daniel -

In production, the interior moldings were sprayed with exterior lacquer and baked, and not polished (vs. the exterior from the body side style line up, which was laboriously polished to bring up the gloss). Interior moldings should be the same color as the interior trim combination calls for, but they use exterior lacquer. The fiberglass dash panel and windshield lower garnish molding were flattened to a much lower gloss.

                  John,

I see in the picture that that rear valance panel is not on the car. I assume these were removed after the paint was dry and placed inside the car until final assembly?

                  Thanks,

                  James West

That's correct - the rear valance wasn't installed until after Body Drop; in the meantime, it got a free ride in the rear compartment.
