Where to send Balancer for Rebuild?

Does anybody restore original Harmonic damners/balancers? My father has a 64 Corvette and it currently has a replacement balancer, but the timing marks do not line up correctly. I found his original balancer the other day and i would like to get it rebuilt if possible. The rubber ring is in pretty bad shape and will need to be replaced. This is for a 327/250hp, so there isnt much to the balancer overall.

    Thanks

I sent out my 72's damper to Damper Doctor or someplace to that affect years ago in CA. I took pictures and witness marked it. When I got the damper back it wasn't mind, took 3 return shipments and several calls to get mine back. The ones send to me were not in as good of shape as mine was and even though I specifically asked for mine back it was just tossed in a core box when it arrived.

Why don't the timing marks line up? I would think that if the one on the car is the same size as the original it should align. The KEY-WAY should be in the same spot. I say this assuming it's a 327/250 or 300 hp balancer.

If what is there now is an 8 inch balancer then I understand the alignment problem. If it is an 8 inch balancer, then the timing chain cover has the timing tab in different place. You may need to get the correct timing chain cover.

I'd like to get the original one from my 60 redone and I have been holding back because of experiences like these.

I suppose a call to the shop to inquire how to get mine back would be in order.

            Chris

The machine shop I'm having rebuild my engine is sending my original balancer to Damper Docker to rebuild. Their number is 530-246 2984.

Thanks, i will call them in the morning.

The balancer is aftermarket and that is why the marks do not line up. I put a bunch of aftermarket junk on his car 10 years ago and now i am putting it back to the way it should be.

I just want to clarify that the work done on my original balancer was great. I installed it and checked it against TDC #1 and it was right on.

I would recommend you just take the precaution and make arrangements that yours is what you get back. This would apply to any rebuilder you choose.

The first one I got back was rebuilt but was also hammered on pretty good by someone and I knew it wasn't mine.

                  Harry,
The outer part of the babancer with the marks slips on the rubber mount to another position.

I used to pin them before I got into restoring to prevent that.
