OEM Spare Tire

I was doing some exhaust work today and decided to drop the spare on the '72....

Sitting there was an original tire! No, it's not new. It probably ended up in there after the first new set of tires went on.

Here's a few pics - I think the battery was fading on the 2nd shot.

Re: OEM Spare Tire

Chris, One the original tire manufactuers was goodyear but in 72 its was not a radial tire, I am sure its a older tire but not the factory. There should be quite alot of details in the archives for 70/72 cars.

From the TM & JG

Raised white letter tires were either Goodyear, Firestone and in 1972 only US Royal brand. The Goodyear tire had white letters reading Goodyear Wide Tread F70-15.

Well of course you guys are exactly right - no radials in '72

If I read the '73/'74 TIM correctly, this is one of the two tires possible for those years.

Thanks for setting me straight,

Yes, it might be a 1973 or 74 tire but it's definitely not one used earlier.

Chris,

If you can find the indented manufacturer's code (probably on the inside, but maybe both sides) the last three numbers will be the date code in WWY format. for example 434 would be 43rd week of 1974.

Missed by one year. That would be good for a '73.

when I bought a 70 few years back it had original spare it ( I verified it), anyway one day working in garage and heard loud bang/pop, checked around garage and found tire was shredded from a blowout .... fortunately the spare was not in carrier but just sitting against wall during car cleaning. glad I was not next to it.

I always thought my spare in the 72 was an original. Didn't they use Firestones in 72 ?

Jim they did use Firestone in 72, flip the tire over and check the date as Terry says in his post. This will give you some sort of idea if its original.

Thanks Ed,

I will dig it out and look later.

I realize now that I read Reba's post incorrectly.
I see it says that they did use Firestones in 72. I read it at first to say " in 72 only US Royal . Meaning that was the only one used, not that it was only used in 72.

Sucks getting old !
