    63 Glove Box Lamp Sheild

I was looking in the archives for info on the sheild , for my mid march car, I am starting the re-assy. of the dash and interior and noted that there was no sheild in my car.( Not to say there wasn't one) the glove box appeared to have never been out and had a round bulb. There was some discussion on the the topic of when it arrived, was there ever a true answer to when? Maybe some of you 63 owners can post what the find on your car, I know there are a few unrestored car out there. Thanks Ed.

Re: 63 Glove Box Lamp Shield

Ed, does the back of the lamp switch in the glove box have many fingers that hold it in place? If no, then it's a replacement switch and probably not the original bulb.

The bulb could have been replaced with a round one as they did burn out.

Is yours a very early car?

    Cheers

Harry , There are only a few fingers that retain the socket. and with anything as old as my car its possible the bulb is wrong. although when I removed glove box I had to cut wire so it would make things easier for removel, and installed a quick connect. the box appeared to have never been removed. my Car is on the edge of being a early car I think(10674)?

Here is a picture of original switches. The full size 63 Chevy's used the same switch with the round bulb.

Did the '63 incorporate the shield?

            Edward,

The 63 AIM shows that the shield was added to the parts list on 11 January 63, along with the new design bulb. My guess is that the change made it's appearance on the assembly line within a few weeks or a month at most.

Can someone please post a pic of the correct early bulb and the later shield?

              Thanks,

There is only one shield and it will only fit the later (non round) bulb.
Most likely the bulb changed to accommodate the shield.

Bob, You're right, that wasn't clear. I meant the first bulb, as well as the shield that was added later with the new bulb.

                  Thanks,
                  Mike

Mike, there is a shield in the picture I posted.

                    Cheers!

Ed, no one make a repro that looks like the original, you need to find an original.

The good news is, as I recall, the same switch was used from 1957 to 1965 for the entire Chevrolet line of cars. They are out there and the price is not over the top.

A repro shield is made by most of the folks, Paragon, LIC, etc.

Oh yeah, thanks Harry...I didn't look at that pic too closely

Should early cars have round bulb with no shield?

Just wondered, 'cause a round bulb with no shield cost me several points at the National on my November car....

I've got a shield and a oblong bulb here, but i hate to change to them if the parts I've got on there now are original....
