      Jim,

Feel truly sorry for Russ. Russ had nothing but good intentions to help Noland and share Noland's wealth of Corvette documentation.

Have you heard anything from Russ lately?

Have been told that it's mainly photos on nolandadams.com

You are absolutely correct in your assessment of Russ's intentions. He went to a lot of extra effort from which he personally did not stand to benefit. For going above and beyond, he got screwed.
Have you heard anything from Russ lately?
Yes, very recently in fact. He's been extremely busy this summer and there were several weeks of "radio silence" during which I didn't hear from him. He has come up for air (if you'll pardon my mixed metaphors) and has had time to run a couple of vintage races with his '57 racer.

As his work load lightens I expect him to once again be actively involved with Corvette stuff.

Oh, and I agree completely with posting #2.

          Re: Noland Adams Image Library

After reading both threads on the subject here is what I think. It appears that Russ had digitized the collection in such a manner that would have made it downloadable once you had access to the site. Ms. Erhart convinced Mr. Adams that once his collection got out into the "wild" his revenues would dry up. eBay is full of people selling pirated material for 10 cents on the dollar that a legitimate businesses spent producing the original. Take a service manual. A legitimate business will get the license from the OEM, scan it, produce it, and sell it for around $70-80 a pop. Someone buys a copy of the legitimate one, copies it, and then sells their pirated version for $9.99. Which one are you going to buy? That's the way it is. It sounds like Ms. Erhart convinced Mr. Adams that she had a way to protect the integrity of the collection while at the same time offering it for viewing to the hobby. It sounds like she plans to offer a yearly subscription to view the material which will encoded in such a manner that it will not be downloadable, look but you can't have, thus ensuring revenues for a much longer time. The technology to do this would require that the collection be rescanned in the new format. Also there is technology out there that will key your subscription to one computer, thus preventing one user name and password being used by multiple users. As far as waiting for the Adams' family to be out of the picture, I would assume that any revenue generated by the project and due the Adams' family would go to the estate as long as the project continues to make money or the estate "selling" their interest. For whatever reason this is taking longer then expected and I believe the reason is ensuring that the collection is truly secure and not able to be downloaded. It appears both Mr. Adams, and Ms. Erhart want to make the collection available for viewing but also wish to maintain control of the collection for revenue generating purposes. You can't blame them for that.

            Re: Noland Adams Image Library

Sounds to me like what's good for the goose is not so good for the gander. There are those that want to keep cryptic the golden grail of corvette order numbering, so as to be in control, and be the ultimate keepers of the gates of legitimacy. Whereas if one wants to do a little oversight, as to his personal collection, and keep it out of the uncontrolled public domain (sound familiar?), this is unexceptable. Unexceptable because of friendship, broken promises, or even the common good of his collection being open to the entire corvette community. There is a kind of irony in the oversight comparison of the Adams collection and the oversight of GM #'ing data by persons with (direct or indirect) monetary interests. You may say there is a difference in motivation, but is there??? $$$$$. It has been said if you have an open mind your brains may fall out.

Nope. The package Russ worked so hard to scan/digitize and compile was to be offered preloaded on a portable hard drive, which many of us got in line to purchase at a not insignificant price; there was no website involved in the product. Noland would have benefitted financially INSTANTLY, to a far greater degree than he's likely to ever see from the current project.

                Re: Noland Adams Image Library

From what I understand, the selling point to Noland Adams was that the information on the hard drives could not be restricted from being openly duplicated and shared. Thus having the potential to reduce the income stream.

Russ should be recognized for his willingness and unselfishness to help out Noland Adams. No good deed goes unpunished.

While I'm sure that was one carrot dangled in front of Noland and Mary, my hunch is that the larger carrot was the impression of greater financial rewards to be had by kicking Russ to the curb and going with the web-based business.

The reality, however, is that the file sizes of Russ's scanned images are inconveniently large.... many in the 6MB to 10 MB range. Too large and too numerous to email. And duplicating the entire 140 GB library on a disk by disk basis would surely try the patience of any miscreant.

That said, I'm sure there would have been someone who would have bought Russ's disk and attempted to profit from duplicating it. However, I've got a lot of faith in the integrity of NCRS members and I believe the great majority would have paid an honest price for an honest copy of the Digital Collection.

Noland's website is now offline, and the web designer is no longer an approved forum vendor on the other forum. Wonder if Noland got taken to the cleaners. It's such a shame that the project was yanked from Russ, he would have made something special out of it.

Everyone, except Noland, saw this coming. I was anxiously waiting for Russ to release the collection when the rug got pulled out from under him. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

If the web-based enterprise has collapsed, and it certainly appears that it has, I wonder what's happening to Noland's documents and photos. AFAIK, everything Noland had got shipped to Illinois and was in the custody of the lady there.

Hopefully Russ still has a copy of everything he scanned.
