    Tim,

Very interesting, yours is the earliest car production date posted so far. Although the drawing changed in July of '66 they were still using up supplies of the previous style cover late into the first month of '67 model year production.

If you paint that voltage regulator cover, you'll lose the patina

      Bill,

That's the same build date as my car, and also the car of another member who contacted me recently. We should compare notes!

My 66 looks like the picture Wayne posted of the 65 except the 2 digit number on mine is 56 instead of 55. This car was built in Feb of 66.

Here is the scan of the cast iron top cover.

Drawing date was 3-12-53. Drawing was revised and redrawn on 7-19-66. There were no significant changes to the casting after that date. I do not have the revisions made to the drawing from 1953 through 1966.

Note, Saginaw engineering always called it the "side" cover although 99% of the steering gear applications had the cover located on the "top" with the gear mounted in the car or truck.

              Jim,

It's a lot of fun to learn new things about these cars, and being able to see the engineering drawing you provided is a great bonus

Thanks very much for posting the info and the drawing,

              Scott

My 67 has a body build date of March 21, 1967, and its steering box is exactly like Scott's with just the last four digits of the casting number and a date of "334". Are the boxes supposed to be black or natural?

                  Patrick,

According to the 67 JG, the steering box is either natural finish or painted black.

Based on replies so far, the production line change from "5666723" (with no date code) to "6723" with date code happened sometime between September 23, 1966 and January 11, 1967.

                  Need more data points!

Here is mine. 6723 with a 56 and wagon wheel. Date stamp is 73 (March 14, 1967), which would be fine for my April 18th, 1967 build date.

Interestingly, I just added the date to my dated parts list for my corvette and the steering column on my car was dated two days later, March 16, 1967. Good concordance of dates.

                      Kirk,

                      Thanks for posting the info.

According to the Birthday Book, there were about 6,287 Corvettes built between September 23, 1966 and January 11, 1967.

Does anybody have one of those, to narrow down the changeover point?
