Do any of the members have an opinion on why a 5.25 inch balancer would be on a big block Chevy motor of unknown cubic inches? The motor is in a friend's pro-street car and it seems a bit of an unusual set up. The block appears to be a GM performance block with a set of 840 heads and a Dyers 8-71 supercharger sporting two Holleys of unknown size on top of it. The crank seems to be externally balanced so I'm guessing it's a 454 or larger displacement motor. The timing tab on the timing chain cover has been moved from its original location to one lower on the cover to get it closer to the balancer. Also, the marked timing tab is no longer there, instead, the tab appears more as a pointer with no markings for advance or retard. The motor runs unvelievably strong and makes just over 800 hp. He's wondering how to time the engine with this arrangement with no one to turn to since the builder of the motor is not known. The distributor is a mechanical advance only unit as there is no vacuum canister protruding from it. I think the distributor is a Mallory unit. Any input or opinions will be passed on to my friend. Word is that this car was a former racer converted back to street use. Thanks.
