    Muncie Stamp ID ?

We are doing a garage clean-up today, since its been snowing all day here in Maryland on Oct 29! I have a Muncie 3885010 case should be for 1966-1967 with one inch bore. No vin stamp, but the mfg stamp is P01008
Yes I am reading it right. Did the internet seach and know it can be a Jan but a day code 00?

    Mark -

P01008 doesn't fit the revised '67 Muncie stamp format; might be a '66 with a mis-stamped extra digit?

Mark -- there's been at least a dozen examples of this, over the decade, on "010"s offered on eBay. Remains a mystery as to which is the extra digit (probably a zero), and why.

If you go back two years I probably started the thread on this - or jumped on another thread that then the guys pitched in with their data.

Its a Oct 8 1965 date, lots of them out there in this "first two week of October 65 oops" , give it a month and you are sure to see one on the fleebay.

The reason there are so many that survived has to do more with a mid year casting defect where lots of the ones they made in early 66 blew apart (cracked under hard loads) so you won't find those out there hardly at all, other than the restamps using the wrong P and other fonts on survivor cars

OK Ron; this just in . So now we have this eBay one (link below) P01006, and the one you refer to, P01008 (as being 8th of October).

Luckily, the seller has quoted the stamped Chevelle VIN as 6K104349, so we can correlate the trans assembly in Muncie IN to the final vehicle assembly in Kansas City. I don't have month-end VIN #s for the KC plant in the 1966 model year, but I do for 1965, and those figures imply that this plant was producing 10 to 11,000 cars in a regular month. They probably started '66 '010' transmissions in the last week of August '65, as in 1964 [SOP 1965] the EOM August '64 VIN is 02623. This puts 04349 around 5th of September 1965, if '66 production follows the same pattern as '65. Therefore, high probability that this trans was assembled in Muncie in the month of August 1965, probably mid month, as I have example pics of 3831325 Muncie's on late '65 passenger cars with assemblies up to 8th August.

So, in light of this, do we modify the thinking on decoding the date to these weird stampings ?
