    C2 horn finish

I got sick and tired of the "low" horn on my '67 sounding like a sick cow, so I pulled it off, disassembled it, filed the points, cleaned it up, put it back together, and now it sounds great. The horn itelf has the correct part number and is dated "xC2", which is about right for my car which was built on April 21. (The "x" is a very faint stamp of the bottom of a number which could be a "1" or "7".) The first thing I noticed when I took it out was that the back was slathered with thick gloss black paint. It covers some of the front "ramshorn" as well, and looks really sloppily done. It didn't look right to me, so I pulled the other horn to compare. This also has the proper part number and is clearly dated "7C1". Looks like I am lucky enough to have the proper dated, (hopefully original) horns. This horn also had the gloss black paint slathered on the back, but not nearly as much as the first horn. The "ramshorn" of the second horn doesn't have the black paint on it at all.

The paint on the "ramshorn" of the second horn looks original, and looks to be a very flat black, so flat it has a little texture to it, kinda' like fine sandpaper.

    I have two questions :

    1. Could the gloss black have been slathered on at tbe factory? I can't come up with any reason of why someone would go to the trouble of removing them and slopping paint on them.

    2. What is the proper finish for these horns. I have never seen a paint that would duplicate what I believe to be the original finish. It's almost like a textured paint, but much finer.

    Thanks for any help.

IMHO the horns would have a satin black finish without orange peel runs etc. Krylon 1613 is what I used.

      Dennis,
You should have a satin black finish on the horns. General finish on originals is kinda thick in the "swirl" area. But I have noticed some originals that were more toward the gloss side than satin.

Should not be rough, thick lay down of paint is fairly smooth. The black out on the car was done prior to the assembly of horns.

I wish I could get a picture that would show the existing finish, but after many tries, I just can't. I guess everyone agrees that the slopped on gloss black is a Bubba job. (Bubba worked on this car several times over the years it appears.) I media blasted the horns this morning and will do them satin black tomorrow.

Thanks guys (especially you Steve, as you have helped me out with some specific problems in the past).
