    Voltage Regulator-'65

I have done a search without a lot of success looking for the best vendor to purchase a correct voltage regulator for a '65. Can someone advise me on this? Also, I see that you can purchase a regulator with electronic internals. Is that worth doing? The voltage reg on my car is evidently a replacement and does not have the Delco Remy wording on it. The mounting bolts too are incorrect. Thanks for any guidance.

        Re: Voltage Regulator-'65

A local chapter member became obsessed with the concept of 'stuffing' electronic innards into the Delco factory original case of his voltage regulator. I warned him that my take was he'd be sacrificing a perfectly good factory original DR regulator to make a 'driver' quality part, but he pursued his interest and chopped up a perfectly good 1963 '512 regulator.

When he was done, he proudly showed me how his regulator was totally undetectable! I climbed in the car with him and had him fire the cold engine. The ammeter PEGGED to zero line and stayed there (battery was fully charged).

I told him that anyone worth his salt doing either an Operations Check or a PV would fail that aspect of the car because factory original electro mechanical voltage regulators don't react that fast. The ammeter will track to the negative side briefly, then climb to the positive (charging side) and slowly fall to 'near' zero.

He didn't believe me and grabbed a properly calibrated '515 regulator, installing it in place of his electronically modified '512. On cold start, the ammeter did exactly as I'd suggested. His electronic '512 never saw the outside of his garage since he'd intended the car to pursue a Mark of Excellence award...

For whatever it's worth, I have seen disasters with the electronic voltage regulators.

Money disasters, My friend went thru 3 of them on a charging system that wasn't a vette.

I have an original working perfect since day one 1966.

I think they may work OK under IDEAL conditions but any glitch seems to blow something in them.

Good point Jack, hope there are no PV issues with the electronically modified K66 module?
