    1961 283 Road Draft Tube

    1961 283 Road Draft Tube

Does the road draft tube need to be used in conjunction with the internal PCV valve ? or can the PCV not be used ?

There is no internal PCV valve on a 61 283.
BUT, if you're referring to the canister that is in the rear of the lifter valley area, that is a vapor seperator (baffle) which seperates vapors from the engine crankcase before they proceed to the road draft tube.
Beginning in 63, 62 for CA cars, the road draft tube was replaced with a fitting at the rear of the block and a PCV valve was plumbed to manifold vacuum at the base of the carb (left side of plenum on FI cars).
In 68 (on SB engines), the system was changed to holes/PCV valve in the valve cover. Below the hole in the valve cover, there was a baffle which was part of the valve cover which served the same function as the vapor canister in 67-earlier engines.

Big blocks always had the PCV valve system plumbed into the valve covers.
