    1966 427 block

Does anyone know what is the latest casting date know for a "942" WITH gussetts above timing chain is? August, Sept 1965 etc? I know judging manual says up to VIN #1700., but would that be an "H" block, "I" block? Any known examples out there?

    Thanks

    Re: 1966 427 block

A friend of mine owns a 1966 with a 3869942 block with the two front gussets & three rear gussets with a casting number of I235 (Sept 23 1965). I'm almost sure that the serial number is quite a bit higher than 1700.

Do you think it is original? I have an I-26-65 block with gussets. Just wondering if it would get counted off.

Jeremy, When you say original are you comparing the casting date to a specific VIN#, pad stamping, or trim tag? Reguarding deductions you could check the 66 judging manual, or maybe a more knowledgable member will chime in with an opinion.

i had the 66 427 942 with gussets. its vin stamping was a tad over 1700. interestingly enough, on the rear side of the front of the case(closest to the main bearing web) was the # 962 cast into the rear of the front face of the block. mike

I 21 5 but it was 33 years ago, not sure if I have a picture of that area, any one else have one so I can pin point this?

Mike the Silver 66 450hp 427 convertible I put through the system in 1990, was VIN 1836, it had gussets and if memory serves it was exactly as you describe your block with respect to the 962 cast number.

I'm still proud of that car it lost a total of 1 point on the mechanical section at the National in Anaheim.

Yes Jeremy it was real, you probably even saw it a few times.

Roy, how about a 942 block with a VIN low 6,000 with gussetts? Block is dated I-26-65. Would I be correct to assume that all 942 blocks with that casting date would also have gussetts?

                Thanks

                  Jeremy,
One of the first things you learn in this hobby is never say never. The highest VIN I can remember seeing with gussets was somewhere around 2300, I believe it was an original motor vehicle.
I doubt that all Sept 1965 942 blocks had gussets, but have nothing to indicate it as fact.
